Robbed in Prague

Hi,

Two nights ago we were robbed in our campground. At about 0300 the thieves unstaked the tent fly, unzipped the screen, reached in next to our heads and quietly grabbed two tank bags and a knapsack from two tents. While attempting a third tent they were seen and scared away. The also took a set of spare TKC 80 tires.

We are on a RTW trip and while waiting for new passports, visas, credit cards and vehicle papers we have time to do some shopping. As a side note the hard and digital copies we made of all of our key documents are helping immensely and the Prague police have been quite helpful and created a very detailed incident report. Unfortunately it appears the copies are not legal enough to allow us to drive.

So, we need to replace our gps, riding gloves, spare tires, some small bike tools and the other typical stuff you carry in a tank bag, plus the tank bags themselves. If anyone who is familiar with the Prague area or online ordering for delivery to Prague in 3-4 days has suggestions they would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Paul

It's like the Grinch that stole Christmas--stealing motorcycle tires, what the hell?

Sorry to learn of your loss of kit to thieves. What campground were you using in Prague?

brclarke 10 Jun 2014 13:32

Wow - that is pretty damned brazen! :eek3:

You must sleep well.
Even when camping at home, I put valuables inside the tent, with me. Why make it easy? Sorry to be harsh, I hope you get everything sorted out but whilst 99.9% of people are wonderful, it only takes 1 to take what's yours. Do they have the bike keys too? Ensure to move them somewhere secure :)

Phoenix,

I'm usually not a heavy sleeper but there was some wind at the time that was making the tent shake a bit and hide their noise.

It is still hard to imagine that they were able to grab stuff not an inch from my head.

One good trick we learned from a German couple is to zip to the top farther than the bottom. That way the have to zip much more to get access.

I should also comment that my boots had to be moved out of the way to get to our valuables. Now to design the tank bag/pillow.

Embee, we were at camping caravan.

Bad luck on that. Hope you get it back together and it doesn't spoil the trip too much.
What I used to do when stowing kit in the porch area of a tent, was tie a rope to the kit, usually my rucksack, and run the rope under the tent to the other side, and tie a small branch, or plank of wood, or even a cup, to the other end. If any one tried pulling the rucksack out, it would move the lump on the other end, and hopefully, the pulling would wake me up.
Never had the concept tested, but I slept better knowing I had an alarm system.

We bought a couple of "alarm" padlocks, cheap, cheerful & loud, if we were concerned we'd place one on or tie one to our stuff in the tent, just had to be careful anwering the call of nature not to move it. Luckily in 12 months on the road we never had a problem BUT I know full well it can happen at any time and to anyone and the one time you don't take precautions is the time things go missing. In South America countless times we couldn't find our keys in the morning, usually because they were still in or on the bike...... luckily they were always there:thumbup1:

Pedant here. That wasn't robbery as robbery involves violence or the threat of violence. That was theft. I hope you manage to get things sorted though ;-)

Boatdoc 12 Jun 2014 20:57

I used the word "robbed" as that was on the translated police report. It could be because the criminals turned and faced the witnesses who were chasing them and made gestures as if they were armed.

My initial post was made to both warn people and to hopefully get some advice about where to go to replace our stolen items. My apologies for any legal syntax problems.

Many of the posters on the HUBB do not speak English as their native language, so I wouldn't get too hung up on distinguishing between robbery and theft; I think we all get the general concept that the O/P was ripped off.

teevee 17 Jun 2014 11:29

apparently on this forum it's ok to post irrelevancies that are insulting to folks who perhaps don't have PERFECT language skills and who just happened to have had a whole load of stuff stolen from them, just so long as you call yourself out for being a nitpicking show-off, but it's not ok to call out the insulting nitpicker.

go figure....

Chill out Peeps, will you? Good grief, how do some people cope with life? A slightly light hearted self deprecating remark and people are flying off the handle. I do hope the bloke gets his stuff back. See? Kindness and sincerity....doh
