Roadside Assistance (Breakdown) Coverage
I've just bought a bike in Ireland and will be riding around Europe for 4-6 months. I'm looking for suggestions on what roadside assistance policies provide the best coverage. I notice that many of the policies will only cover 90 days riding in Europe.

Not everyone is skilled with the spanners I know, but take some with you anyway. If you breakdown get them out spread them on the ground, remove your seat if possible with some other stuff. Then sit and wait. Sooner or later someone will come along and stop, often another biker. No better roadside assistance in my view. Seriously I have had it happen. I have never taken out any cover on any trip anywhere certainly not in Europe. Amazing the people you meet and friends you make, when you breakdown.
OR: ADAC ( Germany )seems to be a popular choice for travellers in Europe but I am not sure of requirements to obtain it ( residency?), or what's offered in terms of cover and time periods. |
Check first with your local automobile club.
I was surprised to learn that my local (Canada) automobile association would cover me in Europe. I bought a one year plan for 100$ (canadian dollar) which include up to 4 towing/assistance a year. They even thrown in an international driving permit. I also bought a bike in Ireland and will also tour Europe for 4 months, starting in 3 weeks. I'm not even going to bring tyre levers. |
I live in Panama and unfortunately we have nothing like an automobile club here. So no coverage that way.
ADAC might be an option, but my German is not good enough to figure out what is covered ;) I have traveled all over north and south America and always carried a lot of tools and did my own repairs (KLR650), however for much of this trip I'll be two up and have less room. Also, Europe is a bit more "civilized" and able to get repairs done on the BMW that I bought... so still looking for at least towing coverage. |
