Oslo to Alesund roads ok?

I'm travelling to Alesund in a couple of weeks, anyone know if the roads will be ok for a bike?

Thanks, Chris

Sitting in Oslo right now. It's above freezing, but even still there's a good chance of black ice, and you never know what it will be within a couple of weeks.

For a journey of 500+ km, including the coast? I wouldn't chance it.

Thanks for the advice AnTyx, I'll leave it closer to the time before I decide. Also, what's up with the ferry arriving at 1830? It means riding out an unfamiliar city and having to find a spot to sleep...shame the Bergen ferry is so expensive.

The joys of travel eh?

Cheers

Chris, this is Scandinavia! You cannot compare the climate and weather with central Europe. In March - and even much later! - it can start snowing any given time. Also as mentioned there is always a chance of black ice, a thin layer of invisible frozen humidity on the road. Believe me, I know what I am talking about. It's not nice at all to loose the back wheel, slide across the asphalt for several meters, seeing your bike trowing sparks, just to stop a meter in front of opposing traffic.

Southern Sweden seems to have an early spring this year and many of my friends have already been out riding. The roads south of Stockholm have mostly been dry, but on the small roads in the woods you can still find patches of thick ice. This is normally well visible, the black ice is not. And Norway is a different as it has higher elevation and gets more precipitation.

So I would strongly advice against a bike trip in Scandinavia so early, at least if you are not using studded tires.

Hey nordicbiker! I guess I had a good idea it was going to be a bit dodgy but I've got a some work starting middle of March, I was hoping someone would say that the roads are going to be dry, temperatures mid 20's and not a cloud in the sky!

Hello

It won't help you if someone just says that. :mchappy:

My car warns me if the temperature drops below +4° -> it knows why .

Have a look at the statistics but remember they are all the past not the future.

The roads Oslo to Ålesund whatever route you take will most probably not be ok in March. Try again in late May, they might be ok by then...

Chris23 13 Mar 2019 16:04

Okay, gave it a go but snow has stopped me on the E6 between Vinstra and Sjoa, a little place called Kvam!

Should I have listened? Absolutely!! Would I do it again? Absolutely!!

Just need to find a way to get through the mountains...hopefully tomorrow I can get to Dombas (sounds like Dumbass!) and hitch a ride in a truck through the mountains.

Cheers

So how did your Nordic adventure end, Chris?

Chris23 14 Apr 2019 14:32

It's just started Sennas! In Volda/Lauvstad area doing a Workaway at the moment, the fjords and mountains are great! If anyone is in the vicinity or passing through give me a shout!
