On a Dr650 and stuck in Vienna
Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of anyone in Europe that has parts for a dr650. I had the bearing in the sprocket carrier let go on the autobahn which then chewed up the cush drive setup and destroyed my wheel hub. Trying to track down quite a few bits and any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Jordan |

You probably know, lots of DR's down in Oz ... I'd get on the DR forums and ask for help. Have a new Hubb sent out ... pay the freight to get it to you quickly.
(cheaper than Hotel I guess?) Curious about the history of your DR (I ride one too!). How many miles on your DR? Year? Done lots of off road with loaded up bike? I ask as my DR is over 60K miles and the hubb bearing still feels SMOOTH as do both wheel bearings. I usually replace the Cush drive rubber inserts every 10K miles or so and ALWAYS relube all bearings at every tire change. Otherwise, I have no explanation as to WHY your hubb bearing failed. Some feel over loading and rough off road terrain can be hard on that bearing. within my 60K miles I've been down Baja 5 times, so lots of off road on her. Hi there,
the DR650SE was sold in Germany, Austria and Switzerland until 2001, so you should be able to find a used wheel with a wrecker in one of this countries. But make sure before you send them money, that the wheel is not from the pre96 models. Vienna is not that bad of a place to break down, even in winter :-) ... go and see the xmas market and have a glühwein. good luck mika |

Mollydog - the bike is a 2011 with 22xxx km. I've put it through a few thousand of Australian corrugations and a lot of hours of offroading in Australia. I had last inspected, greased and looked over the wheel bearings 2000k ago and all was fine to my eye then. It was a rather dramatic bearing failure with a cracked race so im wondering if the bearings I'd bought (nsk) were part of a batch if counterfeits that have been found a lot in Australia. If so that could explain my failure. Mika - I've been trying to find wreckers in the above. Do you know any shops specific to motorbikes. Ive made a dozen calls and people get frustrated with my broken German haha. And you're so right. Luckily I've got free accommodation for the moment so I can enjoy the markets and eat all the delicious food. Wauschi - thanks very much for the offer. I may well come and take you up on that. our friend Thomas lives near Vienna and offered his help, too (trailer and all), but does not have parts. I live in Graz, about 250 km from Vienna. Depending on what is really broken a sprocket carrier may be sufficient? They run a breakers yard and do a lot of parts sales, so maybe the wheel was just too bulky to put it on ebay. My Rescue
I cannot say thank you enough for the response I've received. My Dr and I are being looked after better than anything I could have imagined. My thanks to Andy and Tom and everyone else who has pitched in to help. Should all go to plan we will hopefully find the wheels this afternoon. Fingers crossed my swingarm is recoverable.
As for my trip - this is part 1 of my attempt at looping the world on a bike. Starting in London im aiming for Cape Town over the course of about 6 months. Part 2 will then hopefully be undertaken after I've finished my degree and involve some variation of Anchorage to Ushuaia. Hope you can get the new hubb and wheel set up and replaced soon. :thumbup1: We have a few knowledgable DR650 guys here on HUBB, even more on DRriders forum and probably the Aussie DR forum. I would study up best you can while your sitting waiting on parts. It's weird, but lots more failures seem to happen to Oz based DR's than anywhere else in the world. NSU problems, gear box failures, Hubb bearing failures ... all fairly common among Oz DR riders based on my reading the forums for 10 years. In USA and Canada we hardly hear a peep about any of these problems. Here in California there are LOTS of DR riders and many do off road. Most USA DR riders simply commute on this "Cheap and Cheerful" bike, so that explains some of the contrast vs. Aussie DR650 riders. Also, I'm sure you know of the many RTW DR650 riders, most have Ride Reports on ADV Rider. I recommend reading them ALL if you have time. In my unorganized riding group (60 odd riders, all sorts of bikes) We have 5 DR650 riders ATM. Most of these guys own 2 or 3 other bikes so only ride the DR part time. But the DR is a BIG favorite for dual sport off road work riding the Black Rock Desert (Nevada), Death Valley area, California Sierra Nevada mountains and Baja (just a short run to the border for us) . Among these DR riders we've had almost Zero problems over the last 10 years. One NSU failure (this on a friends bike with a dark and history of abuse), NO rear Hubb bearing failures and one blown engine from Lack of Oil (long story behind this ... but basically, owners fault 100%). Some have done Hubb bearings preventatively however, and that is not a bad idea ... if you install the bearing CORRECTLY ... some have got this wrong. (see Oz DR650 for insight) I hope you will consider posting up your travel reports here on HUBB as well as your Blog. In my experience, not many are willing to chase down a Blog ... too many to follow. If you post your ride reports hare on HUBB travel tales then EVERYONE IN THE WORLD can see it. Sort of "one stop shopping". Easy to follow with notification sent out every time you post an update. This is what makes HUBB work and makes it possible for the kind of help your getting from the community in Austria. What Goes Around Comes Around! :D:D:D:D |

So the DR is back alive and on the road where she belongs. I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that offered advice or suggestions and a particular thanks to those who stepped up to help a stranded and struggling traveler as he went. Thomas, Andreas and the rest of the Austrian riders who had input in getting me back on the road were absolute legends and Id be stuck here twiddling my fingers for much longer without them.
