Norway, Kristiansand to Vardo, how long?
Hi
I am planning a trip next year & plan to leave the UK & travel up Norway as far as Vardo then drop down into Finland & on into Russia. Most of the trip will be solo but I may have company for Norway. How long should we allow to get from the port of Kristiansand to Vardo taking mostly scenic roads? Any must see sights along the way? I will be researching Norway before leaving but suggestions are gratefully received :helpsmilie: Cheers, Andy. |
Because you travelling through whole norway, you will pass nearly all the must sees ;). Maybe this page can help you to find some nice norwegian roads: National Tourist Routes in Norway - www.nasjonaleturistveger.no.

...and in real it looks even better :).
Temperatures could become a little bit chilly even in the south, if you travel over the mountains like the sogne- or aurlansfjell. This year the dispay showed 4°C at a rainy day in july on top of aurlandsfjell, while in finnmarken it was quite warm (but people told me, that 2013 was unusually warm in the north). Another tip: If you like coffee, ask for the statoil-cup at one of their stations. With this cup you can get free coffe at all statoilstations - and you will find them everywhere in norway. It was one of my most important gadgets ;) |

Me too! Mind you I shalln't be riding so far north as you plan to. I aim to hug the west coast of Norway until (say) Trondheim before swinging across to Lulea and Tornio on the north shores of the Baltic before swinging south through Finland. Like you I shall be riding solo. I thought the month of July sounds about right for me (after the HU meeting). What thoughts have you given to accomodation? I've joined the YHA which is affiliated with Hostelling International which will get me a budget room for the night. Books and maps, all bought on Amazon? Rough Guide to Scandinavia. Michelin 781 Baltic States Michelin 753 Sweden Michelin 711 Scandinavia Finland Michelin 752 Norway. My plan is to get a single P&O Dover-Calais ticket and ride up through the Benelux countries and through Denmark to catch a ferry at Hirtshals to Kristiansand. A single ticket as being retired I can take my time and don't have the worry of arriving back at Calais in time to catch the return ferry. So whether I take four, five or six weeks, doesn't matter to me. I'd be happy to read your plans. Paul |
