Also remember to check out Tilbury-Gothenburg and Immingham-Gothenburg. Gothenburg is only some 2,5-3 hrs ride from the Norwegian border.

Thanks for that Steve. I did read the warning but was wondering how likely it was for non-freight to be refused or delayed. The per person cost isn't really a problem as I usually travel alone on the Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry so I'm paying for a 2-person cabin anyway.

I really fancy Norway next year so looks like it's the long way via Amsterdam.

Leaves UK from Immingham (no - I'd never heard of it either) and goes to Brevik, south of Oslo. It's not the standard passenger ferry, I think it's more for freight, but they do take cars/bikes. worth a look. Not as convenient (for me) as the Bergen route, but much quicker and cheaper than the Harwich Ebjsberg route.
