Northern & Southern Cyprus

I am currently in the Balkans, and have been absolutely loving it. Both Budapest (I know not balkans) and Belgrade have been amazing. But on to the point.

Im on my way down to Cyprus and plan to spend the winter there. The plan is to ride through Turkey, take a ferry to Northern Cyprus and then cross into Southern Cyprus. I did some research online and it seems like there might be problems crossing from North to South. I also read that it should be no problem since I have a EU passport.

Does anyone know what the situation is? Will I be allowed to enter from the North?

Did you stray outside of Budapest much?

I'm not a fan of the city, but Hungary in general has nice bits :)

Sadly not too much. I did ride down through Slovakia to Budapest and onto Croatia. I have to work during the week, so I usually spend the week somewhere where I can get stable internet (Budapest) - That leaves the weekends for longer riding.

But from what I saw - Hungary was beautiful. Really enjoyed riding in the Lake Balation region. And the border crossing into Esztergom was memorable. Hopefully I get to explore the country better at some time, but I wanted to hurry south to escape the cold winter.

Smart move, I've wintered in east Hungary in winter and they really know how to do cold there :) Croatia also gets a thumbs up from me, though again away from the cities ... there might be a theme here, lol

Hey,

I cycled from north to south and back without any issues back in 2016. I used the Nicosia crossing and it was straightforward.
I didn't have a motor vehicle though, just my bicycle.

There was a guy on one of the Fb overlanding groups who in 2019 (I think) took the ferry from Turkey to TRNC, then crossed into Cyprus without an issue. He found however that he was unable to ship out from Cyprus, so had to return to TRNC and to Turkey.

So, before covid it was possible. I would suggest checking the Tripadvisor forum for up to date info - I got a lot of good info on crossing the de facto border there.
