Non EU vehicle in EU/UK

Hi everyone

I'm driving from NZ to UK in an NZ vehicle and I am a UK passport holder.

I'm currently in Bulgaria and have got a green card for all of my stay in the euro zone.

I've heard rumours that an EU citizen cannot drive a non EU car in the eurozone, but I cant find anything reliable/on the official EU website. Does anyone know for sure, or have actual experience of doing it?

Also to the UK, will it be a problem that I am a UK citizen visiting the UK in an NZ vehicle..? I k ly intend to stay for 2 weeks. Cant seem to find that for sure either, anyone have experience?

Thanks anyone who can help [emoji106]

Exactly the same cicumstances for me Joss - back in 2014-15 - although I was riding a NZ-registered motorcycle (not driving a Kiwi car.)

I don't envisage any major problems for you. If you want any precise details, then lemme know .. and I'll do my best to help.

cheers

Keith

UK temporary import of vehicles: link
Non-UK licence: link
You get up to 6 months in the UK;, same in many other EU countries.
Your nationality won't complicate things. The criterion is your place of residence.
The key issue is for insurance to be sorted and documented before arrival. I know of no method for a non-res to arrange ins. in the UK. (Maybe if you're a non-dom oligarch with a house in Mayfair!)

Ok that's great..

I guess the key part is going to be convincing the border police that I am a resident still in NZ, problem is my Visa ran out!

I am sure they are reasonable and can understand we are on a world trip and only intend to visit the UK.

Thanks so much for the advice

I doubt your NZ visa will be scrutinised . There isn't any paperwork to complete for the foreign vehicle entering the UK. So don't feel you need to go looking for a uniform to notify your arrival.

However, a couple of thousand kms east , entering the EU Shengen area may be a bit more involved. I'll be interested to know what the procedure is there. Your UK passport will see you through.

But more urgently... have you identified a venue, and checked your time zones, for Saturday's epic match. The All Blacks won't have it so easy this weekend I hope, I expect!

It's a few years ago now but I drove an Aus registered 4x4 into the UK as a UK citizen.

I arrived by ferry from Amsterdam to Newcastle. At the port I showed my passport and drove through, no-one asked me anything about the vehicle. I entered the EU in Italy when the ferry from Egypt was still running and it was the same story there - no interest at all from customs / immigration.

I had the green card insurance arranged in advance but never got asked for that by anyone either.

I've no idea what the official rules are, but would guess that no-one will be interested in you.

Ah that's great guys, all very helpful and all good news!

Our schengen area entry will also be by ferry to Italy from Montengro so that will be very similar.

Yea! I found an Irish pub in Plovdiv thankfully! I asked about the England Aus game in Turkey and the Turkish couldn't understand what rugby was... haha
