That's exactly the way I look at it.

And you get to spend your first night in somewhere you actually want to go to (I believe Heidelberg was mentioned) and not in a crap hotel on some industrial estate en route.

This is another reason to use the non peage routes through France, you not only get to see more, what you save on tolls will make the difference between camping and using B&B (Chambres d'Hotes). Although sometimes you can turn this around and camp on a peage 'Aire' (Lay bye) if you are discrete.

Me and my husband are planning a 2 week trip into Europe next June. Being the net-nerd, I'm the one lumbered with finding routes and I'm struggling to join together the 'good bits' whilst avoiding miles and miles of motorway.

Well with only two weeks of travel time, sometimes it is best to slab it on the motorway to get to where the good riding is.

Step 1: get good maps! See 2nd thread discussing which maps to get.
Alps Motorcycle Tours - Priced Right - Sport-Touring.Net

Draw a line from Calais to Heidelberg and pick secondary roads along it.

Obviously, we want to do lots of scenic routes over the mountains but all I can find recommended on other sites is small stretches.

Link those small stretches. You'll find the parts in between are just as good. There are very few boring sections in the Alps.

Look for sites with pics, find them on the map and generate your tour.

Better still, that link above also has FREE downloadable maps of motorcycle touring suggestions. Those maps are put out by the ADAC, the German auto club.

I'll be there all next June. See you on the road.
