insurance for a foreign biker and rider in Europe
 

hi all
i would like to ask what is the steps to get my self and my bike insured to make a trip to Europe on my bike ??
im planning to to ship my bike and do the North cape so mainly will be ( Finland ,Sweden ,Norway , Denmark ,Germany ,Holland )

Those countries shouldn't be problematic. If you can't find a local insurance company offering European cover, I just had an email from these folk, TourInsure.de, who insure foreign-registered bikes for all European countries including Russia and the Ukraine(!)

Don't be put off by the German site. They also speak English - just click the little British flag at the top right of the screen.

Also...
Mototouring - GreenCard insurance for non european vehicles
is another option.

I've bought insurance for my Canadian motorcycle from Mototouring in Italy (see post directly above) several times. They have good service, I am happy with them. Not cheap, but they are dependable.

Insurance Green Card for Europe
 

Got 3 months Green Card insurance from motocampbg@yahoo.com for 140 Euros. Does not cover most of the Balkans. Starts 25th March.
This is not cover for theft/damage/breakdown, just compulsory 3rd party cover. Does not cover rider either.

Getting insurance for all the countries that made up former Yugoslavia is no problem, you just buy it at the border crossings into each country.

During the past 3 weeks, I have travelled through most of the former Yugoslavian countries. Here's how the insurance formalities have worked out:

Slovenia: It's part of the EU, therefore covered on the EU 'green card'.

Croatia: Not part of the EU yet, but they have signed onto the EU 'green card' insurance scheme, hence it is covered on the EU 'green card'.

Bosnia: Buy it at the border crossing, €10 for about 10 days.

Montenegro: Buy it at the border crossing, €10 for about 14 days.

Albania: Buy it at the border crossing, €10 for about 15 days.

Greece: It's part of the EU (although you would hardly know it, judging from the condition of the Greek roads), therefore covered on the EU 'green card'.

Macedonia (FYROM): Buy it at the border crossing, €50 for about 14 days.

In all cases, what happens is this: You stop at the customs entry point, the Customs Officer asks to see your insurance, you tell him you don't have it and need to buy it, he directs you to an office less than 50 meters away, you go buy the insurance (always paid for using Euros, no matter where you are), you come back to the Customs guy, show the Customs guy your insurance document, and they then wave you on and wish you a nice trip.

For what it's worth, all of the Customs guys I have encountered at the above countries have been very friendly and courteous... heck, "welcoming" would be the best way to describe my encounters with Customs at every border crossing so far.

I'm headed into Kosovo tomorrow, and Serbia later this week... I'll come back and post my experience with those two countries after I have been there.

The european green card covers all european countries, not EU only.

No, that is not correct.

Some policies issued by some insurers, particularly those policies issued to European registered vehicles, may cover all countries. But, the policies that are easily available to foreign (non-European) riders for foreign (non-European) vehicles while touring in Europe exclude a significant number of countries.

For example, look at the excerpt below from the 'Green Card' insurance policy that I bought this summer while riding my Canadian bike in Europe. There are a heck of a lot of countries crossed out.

Croatia became part of the EU last year

...which probably explains why Croatia is included in the list of countries covered in the above certificate. The abbreviation used for Croatia is HR (Hrvatska is the name of the country in the Croatian language).

I don't think they are fully, 100% integrated into the EU yet... for example, I don't think they are part of Schengen - but they appear to have fully integrated into the insurance scheme.

Not Green Card insurance issued by the ADAC last July. "HR" is and has been crossed out since I've been buying it annually since 1995.

Last year we went to Austria 14 days via holland & germany, I contacted my Insurance company told no need for green card, told them I dont care I want one anyway as a back up.
