Heading through Greece right now, a bit of Turkey before turning back North...

I’m slowly making my way across Europe and having a fab time so far - UK, FR, CH, IT, GR.

I’ve made it as far as Metsovo in Greece but wondering on best plans to head at least as far as the Bosphorus (simply because it is there and marks some sort of achievement!) before heading vaguely north for a meeting I must be at in August in Hungary.

So, what should I see along that vaguely non-planned path and where should I stay? I’m open to both fairly cheap hotels and camping in the right places.

Very happy to say hello to any HU locals as I pass through!

My favorite place near your route is Sithonia. Beautiful beaches. High season means crowd and higher prices than usual. It is worth to explore. Kasandra if you are for more party type of fun.
Have a nice time.

Would stop in Halkidiki

Dear Rachel,

If you are on the road to Bosphorus, I would be you I would not hesitate to tour the Halkidiki peninsula. There are lots of gorgeous camping sites (type camping Halkidiki on Google), wonderfull secluded beaches and good food.

You can also visit Kavalla on the road and its old town and harbour, but beware of the heat there during this time of the year. There is a camping site west of the town (along the corniche road) where I have stayed which has a nice beach and restaurant on it which I have enjoyed in the evenings (prices used to be very correct). Whereas there is one of the cheapest camping in Greece further east of Kavalla, but the place at sunset is invaded by mosquitoes. Very nice marble and other stones on the small beach line though if like me you have an interest in geology. In this respect the area is a mine.

Hopes this helps,

Have a good trip,

Christian

Hey Rachel,

All the Greek coastlines until Turkey are interesting. Spent a night on the city Thessaloniki. It's maybe a big city, but you can discover the beautiful seaport a take a taste of vibes from a Greek city. As mentioned above Halkidiki worth your time. Keep in mind that at Halikidiki there is Athos(unless you are female). Athos you can find +1000year old monastery . You can google it for more infos or ask us. Kavala it's nice, but much more interesting is the island of Thassos. You can visit the old town of Xanthi also.

And some last tips, don't take the Egnantia highway. Use the old national road Α2. If you like mountain scenes, there you have to reach Rhodope Mountains.

Enjoy your times in Greece

Ah - Athos is one of these places off-limits to me, right? :rolleyes2:

Thanks for all the comments - so much to look at and so little time!

Rachel
