Personally I would head to Romania. Depending where you go it can be like stepping back in time. Fantastic scenery and very cheap. Start around Brasov and explore the mountains in Translyvania (yea I know I spelt that incorrectly).

Eastern Europe

Jeff,

I've just come back from a tour of the Scandinavia and the Baltics and can really recommend the Poland,Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania route as a means of getting started.(Kaliningrad is worth a stop to but seems to be the world capital for sex tourists so beware who you talk to or stay with). Realy good roads, food, people and beer. From there you can carry on south. We went into Belarus and you can tell instantly the difference that EU money has made on the former as opposed to the latter, it's like stepping back 50 years across a border. Theres a great place call Grutus Park near the border (SW of Vilnius) where they rounded up all the big statues and CCCP memorials after the fall of the iron curtain. It also tells the story of the Soviet occupation and explains why the Baltians hate the Russians so much. Enjoy.

Slovakia & Czech are worth a visit.
In Slovakia head to the High Tatra mountains around Poprad, nice Secenery and roads are not too bad and things are cheap.
One place worth seeing in the south of Poland is a lake high in the mountains called Morskie Oko. Its near Zakopane which is a tourist town in the mountains south of Krakow

Best of luck

Belarus is one of the most soviet and closed states still around, so if you want to see old style eastern europe it is an interesting place to go. Also pleant of russia will be available to you, Kazan is beuatiful with an interesting history or St Petesburgh to the NOrth
