Dual Passports

We are about to leave from Australia, for an extended tour, 12mths of Europe starting in the UK. The question is that we both have 2 passports ie Australian and also Maltese EU passports, what is the best ways to make the most of them, we assume we will enter the EU on our Maltese ones. Are there any Insurance options or anything else to watch. After this if keen enough may ride back to Aus. We have shipped our bike to KU from Aus arrives mid July. Plan to spend the winter in Malta.
Thanks
Joe and Henrietta

If you're starting from the UK and spending that entire time in Europe, just use your Maltese passports the entire time.

I suppose you're aware of this, but 12 months will include European winter, when there are not many places in Europe where you want to ride a motorcycle.

I'd have supposed that "Plan to spend the winter in Malta." might take care of that.

Ah yes, missed that - but I've spent enough time in Malta, including in the winter, to know that you don't want to ride a motorcycle there. :D

Thanks for responses, look to spend first 5 wks in UK then to Europe with a loop including Normandy southern Germany Switzerland Austria into northern Italy via Slovenia. Then to southern France and looping around back to Italy and down to arrive in Malta mid November staying possibly till mid march. How does this sound and when would it be practical to start riding again, heading towards Greece and Romania, then looping up towards Denmark.
Thanks
Joe and Henrietta

Overwintering in Malta should be quite pleasant - the temperature doesn't go that low - normally not less than 15C as an average. The sea temperature drops to around 15C as well. There is some good scuba diving around Malta and Gozo all year round as well - as they are small islands then it doesn't really matter which way the wind is blowing as one side of the island is protected from the weather.

Coming in on your Maltese passport you will run into customs issues.

EU citizens are not allowed to drive a third party country registered vehicle within the EU without paying duties and taxes.

You might want to call the UK customs in advance.

Arrive on Maltese passports...

Use Australian passports for motorcycle customs???

Unless they look for an immigration stamp? :scooter:

The problem then would be staying too long in one location where the cops would think your overstaying an Aussie visa.

Just get maltesean plates for your motorbikes, should not be a problem with a maltesean passport.

Arrived in UK about a month ago, Bonnie arrived about 2 weeks ago picked up no problems, been riding north to Scotland and just going to wing it till Malta and see after that. Poss get Maltese plates and also keep bike regoed in Aus. so can put plates back on to ship or ride back.
