Dinaric Alps in July
4 friends will travel in July through Albania, Montenegro and Kosovo. Our goal is to ride lost roads and trails around Durmitor, Theth Valley, Valbone and Albanian Alps in general.
We go with well-equipped adventure bikes and we are experienced riders. Any suggestion will be welcome bier The initial track is this, but we hope to discover and expand as we go: Thanks in advance!! |
Beautiful scenery. The border-crossing from Berane to Pec (Petsh) cannot be done since the road has been destroyed. To the left the deep canyon, to the right the sheer wall and where the road was is a deep dug-out. Remains of the Serbian war. Besides that - the last kilometers on the Montenegran side require a permit. I would still ride to the border from Berane in the direction of Pec, because it's really beautiful. If the border police stop you and ask for the permit - just say "Pec, Pec!" and do as you don't understand anything :innocent::thumbup1: They just saw to it that we ride back to MNE :cool4:
The climb from the E762 up to Trsa is a real eye-catcher And the the rest eastwards :mchappy: Enjoy! |
Around Durmitor, Montenegro is a ringroad from Trsa to Zabljak. In my opinion the southern road is a must see, very beautifull and good scenery. The northern road is most driving in forrest so you won´t see much.

And can someone tell me how are the border crossings from Serbia to Kosovo?
I know that Kosovo - Serbia is more complicated, but Google Maps only offers an alternative from Serbia - Kosovo via Montenegro or North Macedonia. Thanks in advance!! |

If you plan to visit both Kosovo and Serbia your best bet is to enter Kosovo from Serbia, not from a third country. You can excit Kosovo to whichever country you like but if you enter Kosovo from a third country and then try to leave Kosovo for Serbia a big chance that Serbian customs wil look at your Kosovo-entry as a illegal entry into Serbia because they still see it as part of their country. In 2018 I went from Macedonia to Kosovo but first went from Macedonia into Serbia and from there into Kosovo. I had no problems leaving Kosovo into Serbia. Note that for years now Google-maps is showing road 125 from Orlian in Kosovo to cross the serbian border. When I was there in 2018 that road just ended at the border. There was no crossing and no road anymore. |
Another tip:
Your picture with the initial track showes Budva - Kotor via the main road. Have you thought about the mountain road Cetinje - Kotor? You may expect a lot of traffic there in high summer but not without reason. If you haven´t already, I would advice you to look it up and think about it. As Vaufi said: don´t miss out the climb from the Piva canyon (E762) to Trsa. Best regards, Rögnvaldur |

Our plan is to enter Serbia from Montenegro and from Serbia to Kosovo through the Merdare border crossing. Once in Kosovo we will no longer return to Serbia and will go to the Theth Valley. Do you know if this border crossing is working? |

I have no experience with the borders between Kosovo and Albania but at the bigger crossing you should be fine. Especially now since they have arrested a lot of corrupt officers for about 2 months ago. But I think that corruption was more against their own citizens rather then to foreigners. |

I have been looking for more information about that border crossing and I have found what you mention, a great reform was made and it was modernized: https://www.unops.org/news-and-stories/stories/crossing-points |
