Current Balkan Insurance details? Particularly Kosovo?
Belle and I are going through from Sarajevo to Bulgaria in the next couple of days, and are trying to figure out our route. A huge Insurance bill is not welcome, so we were wondering if anyone has uny up-to-date information in the insurnace costs for the countries in between.
Kosovo is the big question. Do they have the same insurance rules as Serbia? What are the insurance costs for Macedonia, Montenegro, and Albania? Can't find recent information on the HUBB, hence the question. Any help would be much appreciated. |
Macedonia I just paid 50E for 15 days this morning, no way out except around, I am hoping to do Albania and Montenegro as well, but not too much, otherwise I will go north to Hungary and Romania instead
|
Serbia - your most direct route - if you have EU / UK insurance and reg bike - they do not require greencard anymore - crossed border last weekend.... did not even ask for papers.
And on the crossing past Visegrad into Serbia ... never ever been asked for vehicle docs... the RS and Serbia sort of merge there!! Other countries... not sure so will not spout BS !! |
Thanks guys!!! Looks like we'll be skirting around now, Especially as we are snowed in in Sarajevo!!!! We may have to skip Bulgaria and go straight to Turkey if it doesn't let up in the next couple of days.....
Wish us luck, and if you can fix the weather, please go ahead!!!:freezing: |
I just spen tall day riding in the rain from Macedonia to the Greek west coast, heading north in Albania tomorrow. Apparently, forget about paying for green card, they have no clue, so we shall see what happens ;)

TS, you're going to cross at the same spot I did a couple of years ago. I told them I'd be sure to buy insurance as soon as I got the chance, and that seemed to be all they needed. Albania's great for the coast, the mountains, little villages, Roman ruins, and weird little pillboxes by the gazillions. Enjoy!
I can't remember why I ended up with leftover Albanian currency: maybe there were no moneychangers at the border. I went to a fair amount of trouble trying to off-load it, including making a side trip to another border from Macedonia, but ended up giving it away to an Albanian Kosovar who seemed to need it more than I did. Probably you'll deal better than me. Mark |
I had leftover Macedonian money, no changer at the border, wankers!! Then I realised it was about $4 worth, so no big deal.
Most of the time I am using a travel credit card except for a small amount for beer etc, so I will attempt to do the same in Albania and it is nice to have a bit of currency as a memento It is raining all the way up the coast, it may not be fun, I may stay here another day Cheers TS |
OK, went through Albania, crap roads and drivers and did not pay for green card, in fact nobody mentioned it at any time, in nor out of the country. Mind you maybe I should have, I was involved in a crash with a car within 20km of the border!!!
Entered Montenegro, easy peasy, nothing mentioned once again I will let you know about Croatia soon, I will not be doing Kosovo, I am doing the coast northwards Cheers TS |
Left Montenegro, entered Croatia, nothing asked nor mentioned about green card, I wil be heading east through Bosnia, Serbia then on to Romania and Dracula's Castle, will let you know of what is required
Cheers TS |

Do you know of any cheap accomodation in that area, with bike parking near a cheap bar/food place? Cheers TS |
Got held up at the Bosnian border while I went to buy the Green Card, cost 10Euro and must be bought on the Croatian side of the border, prior to crossing over. It goes for 10 days
I will be entering Serbia tomorrow, let you know the score |

Croatia/Bosnia
Crossed the border yesterday at Metcovic, you can purchase green-card
insurance at the portacabins before the Bosnian border post, 10Euro. |
Crossed Croatia/Bosnia at Metkovic 2 days ago, same price 10 euro for 7 days. Tried crossing slightly further north but was no insurance broker there so they sent us back down to Metkovic.

Compulsory Insurance Unit | IAK Found this info about Kosovo. Looks like they sell it at all borders and it will be around 13 euro per bike.
Making a thread here at ADV trying to get all the details together on Balkans into one place. BALKANS INSURANCE (Green card) - border insurance prices and experiences - ADVrider |
Greetings,
I could use your help. I have an Africa Twin (RD07) & am thinking of heading down to Serbia & Montenegro next week for a bit of a tour. Thr bike & I live in Romania, but its a UK bike. What papers do I need? My MoT is a bit old but I can solve that! But my licence & insurance are uk originated, with greed card etc. do i need special insurance for the bike since i'm going outside the EU? My insurer was not sure when I asked a week ago? Also, do I need an international driving licence? Best wishes, Damian Galvin Look me up if you need help finding biker accomodation in Transylvania. Http://www.whitemountain.ro |
Hi Damian,
For Serbia now - your UK policy should suffice for basic cover as they are now party to EU agreement in the same way as Switzerland and Croatia. They did not even ask for my insurance at border this year. Montenegro - not sure. For extension of full cover - that will depend on your insurer - the same applies for cover in BiH. Your EU licence is fine. Give me a call and can give u some pointers. Gavin |
UK registered and insured bike, wasn't even asked to see the papers for the bike, let alone insurance, when crossing into Serbia. As per below, I have linked a thread on ADV in relation to all experiences crossing Balkans borders.
We got through the Montenegro border free but others have paid. More details in the link including where we crossed. :) |
