Crossing Germany on way to Italy Misano

Hello Folks,
Can anyone advise me as to a 'tasty' route across Germany (from Amsterdam) please. On the way to World Ducati week in Italy. Never been to Germany before really looking forward to seeing a new country.

It is a big country. I would certainly recommend the black forest and Bavaria and any nature parks you can pass through on the way down. How long are you thinking of allocating to the journey down?

Unfortunately I am either trying to get from the UK to Austria or visa versa so Germany is a transit country for me. As much as I loathe autobhan often it is the fastest route from A to B. I do like to come off though and meander my way through the German, French, Belgian border lands. That is very nice around there.

I haven't been over the Eastern side yet so cant comment.

Riding in Germany is only really enjoyable away from cities and major roads. On highways (yellow B numbers) expect lots of traffic and 70 km/h speed limits at almost every intersection. That means you need good maps (or GPS) and time.

Stay West of the Rhine, travel through the Eifel, Hunsrueck and Pfalz. You can cross into France here and last time I was there the A35 in France was free. There are some bridges across the Rhine further South. If you cross further North in Germany the motorways are often clogged.

The Black Forest is very nice, of course, but on a fine weekend it's chock full of traffic. The Voges on the other side in France are just as nice, but less crowded, but I think you might get off your course a little.

If you want to go this way you can email me and I will look up some of my old favourite routes. I used to live and ride there.

The autobahns are a great from getting from one end of the country to another very fast, wouldn't fancy it on a bike though.

Along the Mosel River!

Hi,

I would enter Germany around Trier, Nürburgring race track - then following the Mosel River, nice area!

Going South into the Pfälzer Wald area, Johanniskreuz - motorcycle paradise!

Later I wouldn´t go to the black forest, sorry... I would cross the border into France - riding through the Vogesen, it is a lot nicer than the black forest...western side of Rhine river. The villages and roads are great and nearly no traffic on the small roads!

Have fun - Jens

Or come to our HU Germany Meeting beginning of July or our Italy Meeting middle of July at Lake Garda!!!
