Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia & Montenegro

Hello, I´m gonna give a walk around balkans this summer and I´ve rent a KLR 650 with these guys, do know them? Home
They are from Montenegro, then my wife and I will go near the coast of Croatia and then Slovenia, Bosnia and south again.
Any advice or recommendation?
Thanks in advance :D

We have been in BiH, Montenegro, Croatia and Albania the last 3 years. With backpacks and motorbike. All countries are great for travel especially with the motorbike.

I would recommend to go to the Durmitor National Park it is beautiful and not a lot of people are going there. Do not only stay at the coast as you would miss the best streets for riding.

Just get some taste:

Also along the Skadar Lake you have plenty nice spots on both sides. In Albania go to takea trip lake Koman, take the ferry or take the street to Puke and Fierze...simply amazing. I am happy togive some more Information...

Thank you, Northface, did you rent your motorbike with which company?

We used a trailer to get the bikes from Germany to BiH. So I don't have any experiences with renting a bike down there.

I have a question, If you don´t mind:

- About gas stations, is there any singularity like french g.s. or you just pay with cash and thats it. Do you make it by yourself or there is someone in charge of it?

francs 19 May 2016 15:02

gas stations

Cash is a "way to go" . Most of petrol stations are modern type and they do accept credit cards, all accept money (but you had to have local currency or you might have problems or they will overcharge you) . "Automatic" (without personal) are rare.

Great! so by card is ok, that´s a great new!
Thank you man :)

Lonerider 20 May 2016 02:06

Quite a lot of petrol stations I visited on my trip had someone to put the fuel in for you, if busy though I sometimes did it myself. I paid cash all the time rather than use the card, I could keep an eye on what i was spending and I never got overcharged as you can see the price on the pump

Hi Gepetin:

All of the former Yugoslavian countries are well along the path to 'modernization'. Hence in all of them you will be able to find big gas stations that look exactly like the new stations in Spain - heck, even the Red Bull and the chocolate bars are in the same place on the shelves as in Spain.

At these newer stations, you can 'pay at the pump' with a credit card, and you can fill your own moto.

Of course, you can still find much older stations where someone will want to operate the pump for you (because it is very old, perhaps lacks an automatic shut-off), cash is preferred, etc. Just avoid stopping at those ones.

Perfect! Thanks Lonerider & PanEuropean, so not much differences with my petrol stations.
I have another question, if you don´t mind :)

Thanks in advance.

A little gift, this is an aproximation of my future route. I would preferred more Bosnia and even Serbia and Montenegro butttt...time and wife rules :D

You only need a Vignette if you intend on going on the Motorway or some Expressways. I didn't use them so I didn't get one. I prefer using small roads.
Have a look at this site, it explains it well, including where you can buy them from

Vignette - Toll Stickers - FAQ - Slovenia - Official Travel Guide -

I can't view the maps with out logging on to google?!!

Noup, from Dubrovnik to Montenegro. We will take the bike there and start the route one (the first link): dalmacian coast, Zagreb, Slovenia and route two (second link): back to Zagreb, Bosnia and back to Dubrovnik :scooter:
This is the initial plan.

Ah ok, loads to see on those routes, I did quite a bit of what you are doing.
Make sure you do Snake pass/Road, or whatever you want to call it, near Kotor and if you get time pop in and visit Budva Bikers Bar N42.28231 E18.83794 in Budva, the atmosphere was really good the evening i was there.
There are a lot of Castles in the Bihač area if you like that kind of thing
Waterfalls in Jajce are nice to see
All my planning and routes are on the RR
The area around Lake Bled is really nice try to get up the Vrsic Pass

Gepetin 29 Jun 2016 16:26

Anyone knows the year model of the bike? It´s to read its specifications.

Two wheels good 1 Jul 2016 16:43

In Slovenia there's a beautiful route through the Triglav Nat. Park that worth considering. Easy to follow with a basic map - or following road signs for your list of town names.

Wurzen pass from Austria, Kranjska Gora, Triglav NP (via Trenta , Soca) Bovec, Kobarid, Tolmin following Soca river .
From Tolmin south to the motorway or east via Lake Bohinj (fab!) and Bled
It's possible to do this route in day and arrive in Ljubljana.

Great, we like updates and some great photos to look at
Enjoy it, ride safe
