Corsica 2008

Hi all I am looking for some help / info on getting to corsica in 2008.

My options are ride through france from uk to south coast and get a ferry or fly direct into corsica and hire a bike there.

Any info on planes, ferries or bike hire would be great. I only have a week to do it and would like to spend most time on the island.

Cheers

You could start here

Ferry Companies of the Web

and I think there are other, similar sites, that show ferry routes for the Mediterranean.

Hi Jane,
There is a ferry service from Marseille and Nice in southern France. I have used the over night service from Marseille. It is around 1200 miles to Marseille from Leeds, I guess you know your own capabilities in terms of mileage per day but it looks like you could be arriving in Corsica in time to turn around and ride back. The motorway in France you would use to Marseille has to be paid for could add another £30 or so each way.
Corsica is a fantastic destination and great to explore, try to miss the height of the holiday season as it gets fairly packed and the ferries get expensive and very busy.

All the best

Steve

Corsica Ferries

Thanks Steve

I think the long drive through France leaves little time for corsica, so looking into bike hire on the island now. I am not precious about riding my own bike anywhere even though it is the most beautiful bike in the world.
The important thing is being on two wheels and seeing the sights.

My friend is contacting a transport company to see if that is a viable option also.

We ar travelling over to corsica for 1st of may will we need to pre book ferry and how often does it run?

Cheers
Jane

Jane,
There are a number of ferry companies with regular sailings, I used a over night sailing with a cabin instead of a hotel. There are fast ferries which take 3 or 4 hours. If you do a goggle on corsica ferries you will find them or there agents.

There are also a few motorcycle hire companies but the tend to be small one man bands with no web sites, try google again.

Med islands/bike hire

Here you go, from my earlier web link:-

Shipping to Corsica Sardinia - shipping company Corsica Ferries

Not clear to me why you want to take a ferry there if you are not taking a bike - have you thought about a cheap flight into the island and then hiring whatever.

My memory of Corsica (unfortunately not there with a bike) is of the "rugged routes" in and over the mountains, where many of the local riders do not bother to wear helmets and are not too bothered about such things as rules of the road - From my various visits to islands of the med, this is not unique to Corsica!

I have hired wheels in Ibiza - as Steve says, the locals tend to be one-man businesses, so you will have to look for them (but the internet will help a lot in that regard). I just hired "on spec" while on the island.

I also saw some info a short while ago about one of the major car hire companies starting to offer bike hire; I think it was Hertz (and that may have been in Canada only!??)
Anyway, enjoy, whatever you decide to do,

Dave

Planes or ferries

Dave & Steve

The reason I am looking into both options is there are 10 of us going. Half the group are tough hard arsed bikers who will ride for 14 hours a day for fun and the other half of the group....myself included are a bunch of wussy bikers who only like to do 8 hours max with lots of stops and a nice bed at the end of each day.

I am just trying to gather all available info for the group so we can decide what to do.

We will no doubt choose the 2 different options and meet up when we get there.

Thanks for your help guys and the links.

Well that's clear enough now Jane!

Have a good one - hire something small and manouverable perhaps; the island is about 100 miles long maximum (maybe 60 miles wide) but goes up to 1000s feet above sea level with lots of twisties. Can't recall seeing anything more than the odd length of dual carriageway here and there.

I've organised multi bike trips to Corsica over the last couple of years. Thes included having the bikes shipped directly onto the island by a company based in Halifax.

There are now a couple of good bike hire places on the island but it's actually better to hire in Nice/Marseilles and ride onto the ferry. Both sailings will go into Bastia or Ajjacio (personally I'd go to Bastia)

If you stay on the island the best bet would be to stay in Corte, right in the middle and at the entrance of the vallay La Reatonica and not far from the Asco vally, both 'must do's'.

If you'd like more info either PM me a contact number or let me know and I'll PM you my number.

PS: May is a great time to do it..:)

That sounds really good as some of my group are based in Halifax. We have had one quote to transport 8 bikes to Nice from Leeds £4k which I thought was very steep.

I will PM you my Mobile and we can have a chat.

Thanks
Jane

PS are you going at the weekend to Derby?:thumbup1:

There are 2 mayor Ferrielines:

Corsica Ferries: Shipping to Corsica Sardinia - shipping company Corsica Ferries
Moby Lines: Moby S.p.A.

Both pages offer most easy online-booking. If you book ~6mth in advance, you will have huge discounts.
Go there before June or after August. You will have all the island for yourself.
I do not agree on staying in one place. You can stay for 2, max. 3 days in one spot, but than you want to change location as a gipsy! The whole island is one incredible place for motorbiking! Check out some pics from my resent trip here Neue Seite 1
and from my trip 2005 here Neue Seite 1

Contact me in case you want more details.
