Car storage Europe
 

Hello Friends

I have a questions about car storage, if I ship my car from Canada for use in Europe for a trip,and I have a place to store it when I leave(without the car), am I allowed to leave the car in europe? I want to do several loops around europe and North Africa, but I would prefer the vehicle stay on that side of the pond until I am ready to ship it back to canada.This way I could do several large loops over a couple of years.

Everything I have read seems to be NO! but...............

But then I read on this forum where folks leave bikes/cars from around the world(non EU nations) all over the place in europe, so they can resume the next leg of the trip in europe or heading to the stans/africa

So how does that work?

Where can I find actual information?

I am not immigrating to any european country, I an a canadian citizen with a canadian address and passport, but I have access to a secure location in Portugal that would cost me nothing.

I have no intention of selling the vehicle in europe,and would keep plates,insurance ect all up to date for the duration of the stay.

You've already got "actual information." You just don't seem to believe it.

The truth is that it's not allowed, but people do it anyway. I've done it myself, as have many others. I didn't do anything special--I merely stored my bike and flew home for a while, then returned (with more money) the following year.

You'll want to figure out how things work in your home province, too--for example, can you keep the registration current without presenting the vehicle for inspection? Similarly, does it have to be insured at home to maintain the registration? Seems to me I've heard that in at least some provinces if you let the insurance lapse they cancel your registration. This might present problems if, say, you got in an accident in Europe.

Insurance in the EU--a whole separate subject--tends to get more difficult and more expensive with the passing years, but there's always been a way to make it work.

I second what Mark has just said. My Australian registered bike has spent much of the last decade in Europe. After it had been in the UK three years, where the rules say it can only stay 6 months, it was stolen but the police never asked me about the over stay and simply helped me to recover it.

I do keep my Australian registration current at all times. Insurance is quite easy but you need to arrange it in advance - search on here, there are at least two providers for non EU bikes whose details are in past posts.

Ok well that seems to answer that question,its not really allowed, but folks do it anyway.

I would assume if anyone is ever stopped by the police ect, you would simply show your stamped passport demonstrating that you have arrived (somewhere) less than 6 months ago, without regard for when the actual vehicle was shipped out (if you are doing a "long" trip ect)

Now I only have to figure out if it is worthwhile going this route vs purchasing a vehicle locally.
