Camper van in Winter - Germany / Sweden / Norway

Howdy

In late 2024 travelling to Germany with family for a white Xmas in Hamburg.

Will be touring Balkans and West Europe in November and most of December.

I am keen to rent a camper van fir about six weeks in the new year to visit the Nordic and Nth Germany but the FB groups seem to say that winter is not camper time in Nth Europe and that places won’t be open.

Thoughts and experiences and advice.

In Feb March I did a camper van trip through japans snow country so cold doesn’t worry me. Just if things are open.

Cheers

North Germany will almost certainly not get snow. White Xmas in Hamburg will be mostly due to Hefeweissen and Weisswurst.

What sort of experiences do you expect to have in Sweden and Norway? I know people who took a camper to Nordkapp in the winter - it's doable - but there won't be any hiking to do except through deep snow, the views will be limited, daylight will be from a couple of hours to pretty much zero, and all the wild parking locations that make campers an attractive option will almost certainly not be cleared.

So... it would be a lot of time spent in Statoil parking lots and waiting for the plough to come and lead a convoy.

Thanks mate.

Just touring around is the plan.

Our friends promised snow so dammit they better get some in lol.

So for once FB was right?

Pretty much. Also, some of the really desirable ferry routes (like the connection from Tromsö to Andenes via Senja) won't be running in the winter.

If that's the experience you want, I'd just take a cheap flight to Trondheim/Tromsö/Svalbard and book some local transfer-tours, husky sledding and winter forest experiences, etc. Save you a lot of fighting crosswind in an expensively rented box.
