Buying a car hard in your country?
 

How hard is it to buy a car in your country, get it insured/registerd etc? I was hoping to buy in France to Spain, but I hear both of them make car buying a real hassle. I am a Norwegian student without car, interested in buying a junked (but working) car and taking it through North africa selling in Bamako or Banjul. Price is my biggest concern. Norway is extremely expensive as a place to buy cars or bikes so I have been leaning to buy a car or bike on the continent. I would really appreciate it if anyone could give me some tips on how to go about doing this and which country would make the best place to buy. I have been leaning on getting a Lada Niva (hehe, I know) from what I know its the best suited of my perposes. Reliable, and a 4X4, yet cheap, slow and ugly come as bonuses. Plus, no lada has failed the Plymoth Banjul.

As long as you have a valild passport you can pick up a car or bike in Belgium and put it on transit number plates. These plates are valid for just 1 month and include 3rd party liability insurance. You have to leave Belgium within one month but once out of Belgium you can go where you want no problem. Any car dealer in Belgium will know how to arrange this for you.

Hey Gecko, do you have an idea of how much transit plates would cost? That sounds like the kind of deal I am looking for. Do you have any idea if I can get green card insurence on that? Another thing is how long would it take to do that? I should probebly just get in contact with a dealership..

Cost was about Euro 150 I think....and the green card insurance is for 30 days. You need to reckon on a half day in Brussels to get it organised. there are several companies that can help you . When are you thinking of doing this ? I'd offer to help you but I am in the middle of moving house and won't have any free time until the end of March .

I am planning on going in the end of february, would be great if you could help!, But I understand if ou are busy, I have been looking into some auctions on ebay.be. Do you know how the plates work? Could it be done fairly fast, or would I need to take the bike into an office and wait a few days?

Thanks for this post. I'm a Canadian planning a similar trip. Do you know if it's just as easy for a guy with a non-EU passport to purchase and insure abroad? I want to ride from Europe to Iran this fall through the Balkans and I'm on a tight budget. Any information would be helpful such as the best country to buy from and that sort of thing.
