Making plans for a trip from Ireland to Nordkapp then home via mainland europe 3 weeks later any tips on places to visit

pebble35 5 Mar 2014 22:32

I'm doing a similar trip

Not really found many 'must do' tourist style stuff but my trip is really about riding, avoiding the big cities, enjoying the scenery, and getting away from it all for a month or so !

My route includes places like Trollstigen, the Atlantic Ocean Road, Geiranger Fjord, Lofoten Islands, Laerdal Tunnel, Lysebotn, plus a good few more !

Have a great ride !

Each to his own (of course) but from everything I've read about Nordkapp, I shalln't be riding up that far when in Scandinavia in June/July. Other than the 'bragging rights' of getting there, there seems little to recommend the place. I aim to ride from Kristiansand up the Norwegian coastline until I reach about Moirana before heading east to Tornio, then south through Finland to Helsinki.

im still working on my plans so what is your budget for a trip like that ? mainly i will be camping as much as i can due to very low budget and beside loving the nature ,but hate rains and cold though ,
safe travel always :scooter:

pebble35 11 Mar 2014 23:59

To be honest I have not really worked out a firm budget !

I am reckoning on about £100 (euro 120) per day. £15 to £20 for food, camping free (wild camping whenever possible), 250 miles per day so about 20 litres of fuel at about £35 per day, plus a bit for ferries and other bits and pieces etc. Possibly the odd night on a campsite or hostel to give a bit of luxury here and there ! And a bottle of beer to drink at Nordkap !

Trouble is, if you work out a budget, you will always end up spending more than that and then you will feel bad about the trip !

Just spotted that you are from Alexandria - so I can understand your dislike of cold and rain LOL! But that is what we have in Europe :(

Fingers crossed I will be down your way later this year - I rode in Egypt two years ago and had a wonderful time :thumbup1::thumbup1:

Hi Pebble35,

Do you have a route planned with distances etc? I would love to see it. I am also riding Norway for the 1st time (I've been once) for about 2weeks end of May & first 10days of June. Are your riding then? Many places on your list are on my list. I thought to do a SW loop as far as Trondheim to avoid ice/cold/snow etc at that time of year. I am hoping to keep budget down to 75/day, but we'll see!

I'm 38 and on a borrowed 2009 660z Tenere :) No hoon, especially considering the cost of tickets in Norway!

Jef,

I set off from the UK on 13 June so it looks like we won't cross paths

i am planning on 200 to 300 miles per day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. It will depend on the roads and the scenery - if I find a great camping spot at 4pm one day. I'll stop, it might be 8pm before I stop the next day. I will be travelling alone so I can be flexible.

Have a great trip !

Looks like your have a pretty good idea of prices etc.

My tip is hugging the coastline, that is where the best MC roads are in Norway. The best tip though is to buy the Norway MC map which highlights the best roads to travel in Norway all the way up to Nordkapp. There are gems almost all the way up with scenic views and great curvy roads to carve.

The map will soon be updated with a new version but the version out is more than good enough. here is a link to the seller in Norway MC-kart Norge, Cappelen kart (Kart -- Norge -- Oversiktskart) - Cappelen Damm
but as you can see it's not selling as there is a new version coming soon.

If and when you are in Rogaland let me know and we could meet up where I can show you a great ride through there, or fix you up with a bed or what have we.

Cheers, and enjoy your ride.

Hi

I checked with Cappelen in Norway and they will issue and have in stock the new MC map for Norway from May 5th. The new map will have ISBN 978-82-02-43716-9 and contains newly updated maps in divided plastic sheets which fit's in the tank bag or similar and also a full papermap with the MC roads marked up for better planning purposes than the old version.

Cheers

my partner and i will be in scandiavia from roughly the 10 may through to the 4 june, and are very keen to meet up with any other riders around and about (our dates are rather rough, as we're currently on the road)

we're entering from finland and will exit via sweden and denmark to germany, heading up to the toop of norway and then hugging the coast most of the way down, before swinging inland and crossing in to sweden - we'll keep an eye on this thread and try to hook up with others closer to the date

Just for your information sir - The average weather/temprature in Finnmark
(the northernmost part/province of Norway) in the month of may is 2,3 degrees celcius and in June it is 6,9 degrees celsius. So remember to bring some decent clothing for the conditions. Finnmark is a beautiful and interesting place with border to both Finland and Russia and the entical minority of the Same people (reindeer hurders) amongst others....

For the north parth of Scandinavia I will suggest:

Alta, Olderfjord, Nordkapp, Olderfjord, Lakselv, Karasjok, Kautekeiona,
Muonio, Kittilä, Rovaniemi and Kemi.

I'd recommend going to the Lofoten islands. (I've written a small article about it in this months e-zine - or you can find it on my blog The Dom way round) I'm doing a talk about it at HUBB UK this summer if you're going.
