APPLECROSS, North West Scotland, April 25-26!!
Cannot believe I did NOT post this event earlier this year!!
Sorry to be so tardy, giving you all so little warning! So, the time has come again, the CHAS Weekend at Applecross, April 24-26 with the actual rendezvous at the Applecross Inn at noon on Sunday 26th. NOT a massed rideout but a Destination Ride to a rather remote place. Famed for it's cuisine, famed for the highest paved road in the UK and more often than not, famed for inclement weather. Come from anywhere, on any make of bike.....but just come safely please? Most riders will head North on Saturday 25th, overnighting in Lochcarron at any of the hotels or B&B's but in April, if you wanted to camp.....no midges!!! Further info, if you might want any pointers for accommodation, routes, restaurants.... Generally speaking, if most riders stay in the Locharron area Saturday night, we muster after breakfast and ride the Bealach on Sunday morning. Have lunch at Applecross, donate to CHAS and then disperse to head home. From Glasgow, around 460 miles round-trip From Edinburgh, perhaps 520 miles......(using the Best route) From Carlisle, maybe near 700 miles round trip This would have been the 9th year but there was a wee fall-out in 2013 between the organising groups, so nothing happened last year! But Applecross is expecting us! Please join us and meet new friends. Further info...... Email me please.......mainescots@gmail.com |
Errrrrrrrrrr
It's not too tardy in my calendar; that is still a lifetime away for me.
I am pretty familiar with the area and the places you mention but what is CHAS? |
Apologies for not explaining......CHAS....
Children's Hospice Association Scotland.....
Coincidentally, one of those charities that Ewan MacGregor is a patron of. His father - Jim, took over the reins of this event when I moved to the US in mid-2010. He and Stephen Moore, also of Crieff, arranged the event for June of 2011 - to avoid "the possibility of inclement weather and the cold". In so doing, they discovered what I knew already, that around 80% of Scottish Midges are born/hatched into the Applecross Peninsula in June. Result, the campers suffer, the riders find that traffic has increased and the roads are more congested!!! Come up! Join the folks who are going and enjoy the roads. Will you camp or would you prefer a hotel or B&B? |
sounds good beer

Does that mean you might join us?

Meestaman127.....
Which route would you be taking? The best.....the only.....A82 to Invergarry, A87 from there?
Really wanted to do the run West to Mallaig, onto Skye, back onto Mainland etc tec but as the organiser, I might just head up and see as many as possible on the way. Think I might go up Monday 20th, just to make sure the roads are all in the same place!! |
Yes I was thinking oban- barra overnight in Lewis then Stornoway (grab some black pudding lol)-Ullapool then down into applecross.
|
Where you leaving from bmw, n, hog
|
Meestaman......apologies for delay....
Still uncertain about where I will be riding from.
Unbelievably, I jokingly invited a friend in the US to join us and he is coming!! All the way from Louisiana! ETA Glasgow 23rd.... Renting from Perth MCS, we will ride around Central Scotland Friday then head for Glasgow Friday night. Probably going to West Coast Harley Saturday morning (just because they are sponsoring the event!) then take the A82 to Fort William. Then the Mallaig road, ferry to Skye, back onto mainland and up to Lochcarron to overnight there..... Open to suggestions though..... What are you riding? Where shall we look for you? |
Riding a 1200 gsa , as for looking for me I'm always lost lol, meant to go to mull of Kintyre today via arran ferry to brodick then missed ferry to Claonaig so spent day in arran which wasn't a bad thing , As for plan Stornoway to Ullapool then applecross will have a rethink as there gonna close Ullapool for works
|
Meestaman.....
Think we will head for Oban on the 24th, South to Tarbert Loch Fyne, ferry to Portavadie before Coast-roading it to Dunoon and ferry to Gourock. Morning of 25th, I'll head into West Coast Harley......see if anyone is there and blast up to Green Welly.
Then we'll go via Mallaig, Skye and up to Lochcarron. Leaving Applecross on 26th, North round peninsula to Kinlochewe, maybe up to Loch Broom and back South via A87..... US friend will be on a rented NC700/NC750...... Could NOT get him insured on my bike! |
What sort of numbers are there expected for this event and where are the majority staying in Applecross?
I'm in Lancashire and considering the trip up... |
Spud Applecross camping is up behind the village and pub - its a good little campsite you may need to book if its going to be busy Applecross Campsite, Camping Scotland, Highlands, Campsites Ross-Shire, However i have known people wild camp along the shore north of the village at other festivals - not sure if this is still permitted though.
As i quite like Applecross i quite fancy a run up myself - probably will - will just be back from working away a while and the missus has given me outline permission for the weekend. So all being well and depending on one or two other things i need to sort - might get to meet a few new faces up there. Tchus jake. |
I think I may well see if I can juggle some work dates and head up.
New bike and new tent need a bit of a test out ! It'll be a cruise up the M6 then Loch Lomond and up that way for me ..... |
