Andorra insurance
 

Anyone bought border insurance for Andorra recently? Does such a thing exist? And if it does, how much (one bike for a couple of days)?

Background is two of us on two bikes are heading down that way shortly and for various reasons wanted to cross the Pyrenees via Andorra. My insurance covers me but my co-traveller's doesn't - in fact it specifically excludes it. So either he'll need to buy something (with minimal effort / cost hopefully) or we'll need to bypass the place.

I've entered Andorra numerous times, heading both north and south, and have not noticed any insurance booths near the border crossings.

Best suggestion I can offer is that your friend contact his or her insurance company and inquire if they can add Andorra to his coverage - either permanently or just for a short period of time.

If it turns out that this cannot be done, just skip Andorra. Honest to goodness, there's really nothing to see there that you can't see somewhere else along the Pyrenees on either the French or Spanish side.

Andorra is basically a cut rate gas station & cigarette store stuck in the middle of the mountains. It's very urban, meaning, to traverse through it from one side to the other is nothing but city riding and stoplights 85% of the time. There is an interesting ride up a mountain at the north end if you elect to take the mountain road rather than paying about 5 Euro to go through the tunnel, but you can find lots of other interesting mountain roads in the Pyrenees, and that mountain ride at the north end of Andorra can be awfully cold unless you happen to hit it on a very hot summer day.

THanks for that Michael. We’re not Andorra virgins- in fact anything but (our first visit there was 52yrs ago). Normally though our U.K. insurance covers Andorra and all the other Euro microenclaves, and in fact mine does this time as well. The person riding with me though is from the US and his insurance (from the company in Croatia whose name escapes me at present) has it crossed out on his policy.

The idea behind this trip was to follow the same route as 52yrs ago on the same bikes (1970 250cc Yamaha two strokes) so, as we went through Andorra then we wanted to go through it now - an exploration of how things have changes really. If it’s not easy to get border insurance we’ll skip the place and chalk it up to some things don’t improve with time.

Please don't interpret my post as suggesting that it is not easy to get insurance at the border when entering Andorra - I have never tried to get insurance there, so I don't know whether it is offered or not.

All I do know is that I have not noticed any insurance kiosks when entering the country - but, keep in mind that I was not looking.

Hopefully someone else with direct experience getting insurance for Andorra will come along and provide more information before you depart on your trip.

Having said that, if you enter from the north via the N-20 and find that you can't get insurance at the border, it's only about an 8 km backtrack (along a very nice road) to bypass Andorra to the east and enter Spain from France. It's much the same - only a very short detour - from the southern entry point if you need to bypass Andorra. So there is little to be lost by riding up to the frontier and making inquiries about insurance availability.

Have a look at google streetview at the border. for signs of a insurance seller.
But I guess there is not much need for the majority of visitors since France and Spain are within the green card.

Since one bike has insurance, hop on the back seat and make a daytrip.

I find it strange that any moto insurance cover issued in EU (Croatia) does not cover Andorra? I would definitely be having a conversation with the issuer to check that is correct and not some "human error" Edit : unless the insurance was specifically for the "European union" ?? Andorra is not part of it.

It is strange, but that's just the way it is - none of the EU 'green card' policies that I have purchased for my Canadian bike have ever covered Andorra. I just looked back through 10+ years of purchases.

Having said that, I am embarrassed to admit that I always just assumed that I was covered when I have travelled through Andorra in the past. :eek3: Now I'm glad I never had an accident and was never stopped by police for document inspection.
