window security film
 

I want to increase the security of the front windows on our 300tdi 110 defender and I was looking at security film. I think this film is 4mm thick, will this fit the defender door?
Has anyone done this? Is it easy to produce a good job its quite important to be able to see clearly out of these windows.
We have grills and a seperator securing the rear of the car.

4mm thick? That seems to be more than RPG-proofing!

Ask your local agent of Pentagon Glass-Tech about their security film. It's more than enough and it's only 300 microns thick.

4mm does sound very think. I have emailed the company to confirm the thickness, the way they have written it on there website is not very clear.

assuming this is tinted film I believe this would be illegal on your front windows, there are restrictions on how dark you can go on front windows, and it's not very.

i am looking at getting clear film, the stuff i am looking at is mainly for houses. they do claim to massive UV reductions etc tec but i think its clear.

look at www.smartwindowfilm.co.uk and its the security film.

You should read the FAQ section on their website - it says this film is not suitable for automotive applications.

Just got a confused quote of 625 GBP from Reading branch for tinted supaglass on rear windows and I think untinted on front side windows, but all a bit garbled, I m asking for clarification. Specifically about the application to windscreen, rear window and tint on front. btw Landcruiser 80

Last year for doing up both front side windows with clear film they charged ca UKP 350. The windscreen is already protected, being made of laminated glass.

I guess they use proprietary materials fow which they charge as much as they want. This, plus the fact they are more oriented towards luxury lifestyle market makes pricing rather steep. Unfortunately, the quality of assembly work leaves a lot to be desired.

OK, 625 pounds for all side windows (that's 6) with tinted supaglass film (seemingly almost impossible to break ???) and matching tint on rear window. Unfortunately they dont seem to be able to do the rear with supaglass. Trying to investigate why!
Technically forward side windows can hardly be tinted at all in the over regulated world there.

I was watching a thing the other day on telly about tinting car windows, apparently a problem on cheaper films is shrinkage. only the more expensive stuff is shrink proof so may be worth checking if that is the case with this stuff before parting with a wedge.

don't worry about uv, most modern car windows have uv blockers in and all non prescription sunglasses are required by law to have uv blockers in for 100% of the damaging uv types (in uk anyway)

I agree with Roman, the Pentagon stuff is great - though it isn't cheap.

With any tint on Defenders you'll get some rubbing as the windows move slightly when partly open. Solution: keep the windows fully open or closed.

Have you thought of putting polycarbonate windows in instead? (Lexan is one of the best known trade names). It's easy to cut the stuff, so you can buy it by the sheet, tinted or clear (much cheaper than made-up windows). It does tend to scratch more easily than glass, but some of the better stuff has an anti-scratch coating - or just accept the odd scratch.

Not that it really matters but a $30 RPG can penetrate anything up to 800mm of solid steel. A bigger RPG will obviously go further.
