Safari Snorkel!! which way round??
 

I have fitted a Safari snorkel to a Discovery 2.5 TDi!! I have the head facing backwards and everyone is telling me its the wrong way round!!! Can you help as never before have i been told by so many people that its wrong, On My Landcruiser it was always facing backwards and never a comment!! Am I missing something??:smartass:

Can be which ever way you want...
I have it facing forwards on my Cruiser... the theory being RAM air feeding the filter/turbo...
With a screwdriver I can loosen it and turn it around when in serious dust and leaves from trees...

The correct position is 'in the bin'. A snorkel should be fitted with a cyclone type pre-filter on top of the snorkel to remove dust or water droplets when its raining. With a cyclone nobody will bug you anymore that its fitted the wrong around either.

I think for any "ram effect" to take place, you'd have to be doing about 300+ mph....

the air has to travel down the pipe, through the air filter then through the turbo... i don't think any amount of speed will give you any extra power.

the only vehicle i've ever driven where air was forced in through "ram air technology" was an old kawazaki ZZR400 motorbike, there were 2 pipes from the front fairing straight into the air box, about 12" long, and fairly straight. even then the effect only came into being at above 100mph.

on a disco? forget it! fit it with the top facing backwards... that way you won't get leaves/bugs/water/general cr@p being sucked down it as much.

Reverse its direction for dusty dry conditions especially when traveling in a convoy...

I'm with Jim on this one, youre driving a two and a half ton brick, not a track day car, face it backwards.

No problem with that. As for water, it gets atomized as it gets sucked down. So no problems there.

Fit a good vacuum gauge and see the difference.
