A similar anchor in Australia is starting to get quite popular, they work well in mud, sand and dirt, the only downer is that they are a bloody big lump to carry around with you, in both size and weight, they would also be excellent if you also had a effing great big fishing boat yhat you had to moor somewhere.

There's also a thing called Gopher - an attachment for the hi-lift jack that acts like an anchor. Can't say if it works but the principle of one tool for many jobs seems right. Have a look at http://www.pmdessentials.co.uk/catalog/recovery.htm

It works Ok. They are definitely a lot of metal to carry around. The paint quality is terrible. A friend had a brand new one on his roof and it kept dripping rusty watter down the windshield.
I don't think it's worth it unless you are totally alone and will be in the dessert the sand alot. Even then, the extra work of burying a spare tire might be a better compromise.
