Nissan Patrol
Does anyone in the forum have good/bad experiences to share about the newish Patrols? are they as good as the 80's series Landcruisers? any tips...?
I'm thinking specifically in a Nissan Patrol GR 2,8 TDi from year 1998/99 or the TDi 3.0 from 2001 thanks |
I only know that the D42 (straight six 4.2) is a superb motor (agrguably better tha 1HZ Toyota), but the 3 liter has a bit of a reputation for a short life! Only have experience of older 4.2 patrols and they were great!! Stable, comfy and plenty power.

I drove from London to Cape Town +- 46000kms in 2.8tdi the only problem we had was the turbo cover came off which took 5 mins to put back on and dirty diesel in east Africa. Amazing sturdy and handled UGANDAN MUD. A little sluggish up the Ngorogoro crater, but hey whats the rush!

Surfer: what was the average fuel consumption through Africa? could you make the 9/10 km/l that Nissan claims...? cheers |

Tell you the honest truth...we did not really worry about fuel. If you worry about it it tends to be the main source of everyday panic.
But if i had to thumb suck....maybe 7-8km. I know its low but we drove fully loaded, 4 people, roof top tents, 200 liters of water and 120 liters fuel. Through europe we did ok, but in the alps it went up again ..so so though Botswana/desert we used a bit more for all the low range driving. Also we really pushed hard and were driving 130-140 often to get to certain areas on time. |
7/8 kml for 4 people fully loaded is actually very good
did you have to upgrade the suspension or the Nissan's leaves/absorbers could do the job...? thanks again |
engine differences
Well I found that at least on paper there's a huge difference between the 2,8 and the 3,0
the 2,8 is 6 cylinders and delivers 91 kW while the 3,0 is only 4 cylinders but gives 116 kW... and much more torque (interesting to see that delivers even more than the old 4,2...!) RD28T, 2.8 litre (2825cc) turbo-charged diesel, 6-cyl

The patrols are a big old truck, the 2.8 would certainly have its work cut out for it. In OZ I`m pretty sure the 3.0 is the pick of the bunch.
Out here in Dubai they are very popular in the desert, but only available in a 4.8l petrol, but apart from that they are very good and bloody strong with the solid front axle, much stronger that the 100series cruisers and their IFS. Their use of space inside and finish is nowhere as good as the cruisers. The other option in a similar class is the solid axle 105 series cruiser, it is back to basics with a non turbo diesel, but similar strength to the old 80 series, whack and ARB turbo on one of those babies and it would be my pick. I think both the 105 and patrol have factory front and rear lockers as options and dual fuel tanks on the patrol. I have heard a few issues with the 100 series automatic transmissions out here as well, but hav`nt heard a bad thing about the manuals. |

Petrol for Dubai. Those dunes require a little extra for getting up. Diesels tend to fall off about 3/4 the way up. Also pends on height though. But i think for touring petrol is going to kill the budget in the end.

Yes mate, gotta agree, Petrol is`nt the go, out here it is as petrol is almost 1/2 the price of diesel, my pick would definately be the 3.0l diesel for the Patrol.
The new 70 series troopy with the new 4.5 V8 diesel is also hard to go past. |

Now thats a vehicle...i am sure the dunes would be eaten up by that. But i think for africa and that mud it would be the ideal vehicle...albeit the cost and the extra diesel costs if you are on budget.
