As for the TD5 in west Africa, ours made it all the way down to RSA with no problems, and is still going strong a couple of years later. We did however drain the fuel filter and change fuel filters regulary.

Bad fuel can be a major issue in Africa. It took out our 300TDI 110 completely and thats with changing fuel filters, sedimentor, etc regularly. We had to buy fuel out drums in Southern Chad, we had capacity for 300 litres but we still had to buy some from this place. Wasn't even getting up the fuel pipes to the filters, completely gunged up the system, had to get a new fuel pump shipped in from Khartoum after ours completely failed in Sudan from this one load of bad fuel. I know lots of people are quite lucky and its not a problem but given your engine is supposedly more suseptable to it, might be worth looking into acquiring some sort of fuel test kit. Believe they exist although havne't managed to find one yet.
