For all the replies - every possible option covered! I am thinking I will probably go down the route of the heat exchanger/pump type (glind or similar) but the shower at the front of the car to avoid the diesel particulate mixed with the head'n shoulders. Some very impressive set ups described! Yeah the baby wipe box I consider as essential - marvellous things.

For anyone thinking about doing it I thought about describing the finished water storage/heating/shower arrangement that I have completed:

- Glind heat exchanger imported from Oz via UK to Ghana. This I mounted on a bracket (with rubber insulators) that I made up to bolt on the inlet manifold. Up high as there is bugger all room in the engine bay and I didn't want to have it too far or too low where possible off road/stones/stick damage could have potential coolant loss problems. With this in mind I also used some pretty serious steam hose for one of the coolant lines (it also just happened to be same I.D. as the coolant pipe from the engine block)

- for inlet/outlet I used female snap on airline connections mounted into the front bumper. Easy to connect to and obviously only open when the suction hose/discharge or shower pipe is fitted.

- Flowjet pressure switched pump bolted to the battery box.

- About one thousand jubilee clips and yards of hose.

- 108L underbody SS tank. With two 1/2" ball valves this then allows the system to either:
1) Act as simple shower system sucking from a bucket, discharging out the shower
2) Shower or draw water from the tank
3) Fill the tank
4) Recirculate the tank contents while driving with the flick of a switch. Have yet to test how long it would take to heat the tank while driving, but based on how long it took the system on idle from cold to recirculate 20L to VERY hot I reckon maybe half an hour. Only thing is yet to see how hot it gets in the '78 while in recirculation mode... Might be more appropriate in the Highlands than Ghana ;-)

The performance of the heat exchanger is impressive to say the least, and being able to regulate temperature with the troopy heater controls is just too cool!

What I am considering is putting an inline filter in the system, but then the filter has to be a fairly big and pricey seagull or similar to deal with flow rates. Pics below show H/E mounting and airline connectors on the bumper. Got to say that my GF is about as excited with the shower as I was with the turbo... A heated shower system might seem a bit daft for a sweaty, Ghana based vehicle, but I had a work HZJ75 with no heater once and after getting wet in the bush I was always wishing the bloody thing had been built with a heater matrix which must cost Toyota all of 10 quid or something.
