Handleld GPS Screen suction mount ??
 

Hi folks,

Not a strictly suitable subject on this forum, but there's more of you to answer this than in the correct Hubb section, so here's my question anyway...

Has anyone used the suction cap type GPS mountings off road. My Garmin GPS72 is a 1990's mobile phone size unit and the easiest way to position it where I can see it is with a suction mount on the car windscreen.

My instinct tells me it will make a bid for freedom fairly rapidly on a rough Moroccan piste, but you may know better..

Some suction mounts aren't too bad, the self adhesive Garmin mounts tend to peel themselves off due to vibration and heat.

What car have you got? It's an easy job to screw into the dash top on a Defender; not quite such an attractive proposition on a Porsche Cayenne...

The current car is a Mitsubishi L200 double cab, 10 years old. The steeply raked screen means a black and decker drill won't fit easily and I don't know how the dash is constructed hence my question re suction caps !

I see Garmin do these self adhesive mounts - I wouldn't trust one of them. Garmin and others sell suction cap jobs for the screen, some have 3.5 inch suckers which may or may not hold........

your likely to have less problems with vibrationin your truck than say a landie or leaf sprung landcruiser. it depends really on the length of the stalk and weight of the unit.

my dad has a different make which is rubish even on the road because it wobbles so much you can't see the screen. on the other hand my 2 newer garmin units are excellent. I have an older dash mounted garmin (which I actually prefer) which would be far to heavy for a suction mount.

guess ultimately you will just have to suck it and see, so to speak!:D

In a car I've used the RAM suction mount all over the desert for years, lately with a relatively heavy Garmin 76 and it's never come off. Needs a Touratech GPS mount with a RAM ball fitting on the back plus a 4-inch clampy arm between suction and mount for angling - so it all gets pricey. RAM do all sorts of stuff so you can mount on a bike, etc.
I gave up on OE Garmin mounts many years ago.

As has been said, it sure beats screwing or gluing onto the dash if you have a decent car, although I've found you can string a zip tie through the windscreen air vents and then fix something off that.

I'll second Chris's recommendation. I have a Ram suction mount on my truck for my Garmin 60 csx which after 3 years use has never come off-and in a truck it gets quite a battering.
