Green Card Insurance in Europe

I will be driving an Australian-registered vehicle across Asia/Africa ending up in France. The end part of the trip will cover most of Eastern Europe and since we will end up living in France at the end of the trip I wonder if anybody knows whether we can register our vehicle as French (say when we get to Turkey) and so avoid the expensive border insurances through Europe? Or, do we have to present the vehicle in France for it to be registered there? Would it help that we have a relative in a local council department in France who can probably do the paperwork for us?

Mel,

You need one insurance/green card for EU countries and a separate cover for the rest of Europe. I don't know much about countries other than Poland, but it's probably the same story: a green card for two weeks purchased from my UK insurer (depending who you ask) would set me back 25 - 75 UK pounds. The same green card purchased at the Polish border will cost just ca 8.00 UK pounds.

Rgds,
Roman (UK)
