Hi Guys

Are there any users out there that can comment on these units?

Are they as good as they say? What are the downsides?

I am thinking of fitting one to my LR110 Puma Defender.

I used to import the Twine variety, had one installed on my 101 and it worked well, use a 6 litre a minute pump as maximum flow

I had one fitted to my 90 series Landcruiser until about a year ago.
I used a marine washdown diaphragm pump to power it.
It works well, you need to run the engine at fair clip to get water nice and warm when its cold to start with.
My pump had a fairly high flow rate and would empty a 20l jerry of water in a few minutes used continously.
They work well but you will need to think carefully about hose routing to avoid chafing of the hoses. I took the feed off the heater supply line just under the control valve on the bulkhead.

that is the problem with them - great if you pull into camp and want a shower when you have a nice warm engine, not so good if you want a shower the next morning with a cold engine

If you want to store water then look at a calorifier, they'll take up some room but you'll have hot water next morning

Friends have one fitted to a 3 litre diesel - very unhappy with its cold engine performance, happy with its hot engine performance. They've ended up just resorting to using a large galv bucket and heating/warming the water in that and scooping the water out with a tin mug.

Their engine had to be run for about 30 minutes before the heat exchanger worked properly - meanwhile any other campers in the area are complaining about noise and smell.

I never had to run my engine that long but mine doesn't have any other ancillaries off the hot circuit apart from the one heater matrix.
With the heater control fully open the water would get warm after a minute or two of fast idle.
A metal hook that clipped to the pulley and throttle body to hold the engine at whatever speed worked well.
The idea of running an engine as a heat source is a bit strange in a campground, that sounds a bit like running a genny for lights and a TV in a campground, surely these places have ablution facilities?
It was my impression that these were aimed at the times that you were away from anywhere and wanted to carry the minimum equipment.

An Ozzie website also is in general agreement re the cold engine syndrome.

Here in Dubai its usually nice and warm even in winter and until now I've made do with a Jerry can and and length of hose.

I shower the wife and then she showers me!

She used to be my girlfriend and we swear it was that long hose that brought us together:clap:
