What about carrying some empty jerrys on the roof, and only filling them when you need the extra capacity, and obviously using these up first.

We need 700, yes 700 litres, for our next trip, and with only about 300 in the tanks underneath we will be using this option (with some inside the car), and disposing of / donating the unwanted cans along the way.

Yes, I know it will be massively overweight, but hey, have you seen what some of the locals put on & in their vehicles, and, we will use alot of it on relatively easy sections quite quickly to start with.

I'm burning with curiosity about where you'll be going that requires 700L for a LR. Are you really planning on putting 400L (440kg, or over 10% of your GVW) on the roof? It could raise your CG by 5-7" or even more.
I figured putting 8 full jerrycans on the roof of my U500 Unicat raises the CG by 1.4" - they are ~1.5% of my GVW. Leaving them empty raises the CG by only 0.3"; but in your case would raise CG by ~1.8-2".

PS: I note that you will be carrying "some" of the 20 jerrycans inside the car. I would advise no more than 4-6 on the roof. My calculations were based on all 20 on the roof. Each full jerrycan on the roof would raise CG by ~0.33"

Its a TLC, not a landy, last trip I carried about 550litres & 250 l of water & all the other bits for a trip to the Gilf, yes very overweight when we headed off into the deep desert for a couple of weeks with no resupplying possible, but no probs with the Toyotas at all,

I had 9 jerries & roof tent up top, this trip Ive ditched the roof tent
& various other stuff to help reduce weight to help compensate for the extra fuel requirements.
I will probably donate some of the empty jerries to locals when I no longer need them to save carting them about

Mind you, ours was nothing compared to our guides car which carried 25, 20 litre jerries full of diesel on the roof, plus spare wheels, mattresses & bedding,, table etc etc and the inside of thier car was stuffed full too...............Their TLC was on bog standard suspension !!!,

Yes we did get stuck at times, especially when fully laden, but nothing major

I know that this is not ideal by any means, and some may say asking for trouble, but it doesnt take long to use the fuel when clawing through soft sand, and sensible driving is a must. plus, its a great feeling getting back to the UK still with cheap libyan (7p/litre) fuel in the tank!!
