what to do with poor fuel quality ???

hi,
we had a talk with viktor, we are going to opposite ways through ex ussr
so worries for sure with fuel quality
i drive a r100gs pd, he drives a dr400, and i don't know what to do with poor fuel quality
i told him that the bmw takes almost anything
i have some filters to filter the fuel, to avoid "sheet" to go inside the carburator etc ...
i will maybe play with the carburator, what we call "richesse" in french
otherwise ???
any advice please ...

thanks a lot, safe travels

i'm leaving in a week, ready with almost anything, waouh :-)

Hai,

Maybe bring some octane-booster? I guess that could be helpfull.
And a spare fuel-filter would be a good idea.

To fill the fuel-tank I have a reusable "coffee-filter" It fits on top of the fuel-opening and has e really fine maze.
(available at any good camping store)

maarten,
i gonna look for those 2 things (octane booster, the filter you talk about)

they have low octane fuel overthere, yes

thanks,

G'day Vincent,

I've done a little research on octane boosters on the net (just search for 'octane booster') and I've found that octane boosters only lift the octane rating by a fraction. At proportions of 10% octane booster added to 90% 92 octane fuel lifts the octane to around 94.6 with the best octane boosters. It may be useful but its not a huge 'boost'.

But given that the compression of you engine is only 8.5 to 1 I wouldn't expect you'll have much problem with low octane.

Good luck
Viktor

viktor,
thanks
we may find there under 80 octane fuel
i have memories of 75, 78, when i was there
there is also over 90, but it's rare

i'll have some info of a friend tonight, let u know
