New seat corbin, russell, sargent or other
 

Just in need of a more comfy seat for my 1150gs. Any one got any reccomendations or maybe even a seat to sell. I intend to hold on to the original pans, shipping from Ireland is also very expensive.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Try P&P Seats based in Birmingham UK. I've recently got a modified seat for my Africa Twin from them. Its by far exceeded my expectations - fantastic! It cost £209.00 for 2 gell pads, sculped foam, cover and a second removable cover for really bad conditions where the seat may get damaged off road. They were about £100 cheaper than others and they are happy to spend time with you on the phone or in person to make sure you get what you need.

I can address the Corbin and Russell. Either are more comfortable than the stock BMW seat. What you choose will depend on what type of riding you do. The Corbin is a decent seat for about eight hours at a time in the saddle. Since I often spend much longer on the bike, I opted for the Russell, which keeps my soft behind happy for hours on the road. If you want a Russell, send you order in now. I waited about six months from their acceptance of my order to delivery. I also had to send them my stock seat, but that wasn't a problem, since I had the Corbin to ride on in the meantime.

Another note about Corbin. They have notoriously poor customer service, although I personally have no complaints. I have nothing but praise for Russell.

bumwraps in bognor regis did my sportsbike seat, i wanted a complicated 2-level affair with different vinyls and foam work, with colour matched piping too.(in fact, i tore a page out of the corbin catalogue and said "make this for me")
they did a good job for £120. they advertise in the back of the bike magazines, the "W" in bumwraps is a big pink arse.
get an old seatpan from a breaker.

I would advise not going with the Corbin seat. I was very unhappy with mine for a supposed custom seat. The first time I got it there was no way that it was going to fit on the bike, so I sent it back. When it got back to me I still had to modify the mounting bracket to make it fit my bike. I stopped by their factory on my cross country trip and they said they were too busy to help me I would have to come back another day, and to top things off the fit is so bad that it rubbed all the paint off the gas tank. I have no recommendations for who to go with other than someone local so the can fix it if something is not right. Best of luck

I've had a Corbin (on my old Africa Twin) then when that got damaged by some swine, the Touratech seat. I much prefered the Touratech seat. Whilst it felt harder than the corbin seat, it was more comfortable when in the saddle for long periods of time.

When I got the new bike it as the first thing I changed.

FYI: I contacted P&P Seats in Birmingham UK to enquire about a GS seat. They kindly replied that they don't do BMWs but suggested another firm:

I know it's not in Ireland but this guy is really good, he has a reputation and for all kinds of work, everything from motorbikes to cars, horse drawn carriages the lot.... I can vowch (?) for him - he did my land rover seats a couple of weeks ago and they are wonderful.... He quoted me only £20 to recover my XTZ seat so he is very reasonable...

I too have an 1150GS & am suffering Monkey Butt. Melvin's site shows some nice seat mods for the 1150. He raises the front slightly to level it out & can insert 3/8 or 3/4" Gel Pads whilst retaining the same seat height. He also does higher or lower seat heights if required.

He's offered to loan me a pair of 1150 seats for a week whilst he works on mine.

I'll try to remember to post next week my thoughts & whether I went ahead or not. If you don't hear from me, feel free to chase me up as a reminder.

i agree with Eustace, the reason i had my seat customised was because the corbin seat i got was rubbish, not well made and very heavy. it would also have rubbed off my tank paint if i had not sent it back.

We are in France now, passing through looking to get a custom seat made for our Yamaha Super tenere. Does anyone know of a good seat producer who can do one up relatively quickly?

...Just my own two cents on this topic. Over the years or researching the "best" seat, i've come to the conclusion that everybody's ass (I'm allowed to say "ass", right??) is unique. Some of us are boney and hurt no matter what you use. Some of us can sit on the perpetual wedge designed by KTM without drawing a sweat. After only 25K miles i found the answer to my painfully bleeding ass, wooden beads! Only $7 at Walmart. You can cut the lines that weave the beads together and remove beads to fit to your seat. Then use a bungie web with six hooks to attach the beaded mat to your seat. My latest trip was an 800 mile day, and i could still walk after. These seat-covers made for cars are available in Canada, USA and Mexico as far as i know, and are really cheap. maybe try this before spending $400 on a seat that might not even work for you.

I tried this route and while it is a definete improvement over stock I still ended up going with a Corbin. I have to admit however that dollar for dollar it is certainly the best deal out there. I would reccomend that people in search of a seat solution try this before spending big bucks on a custom seat. After all if it doesnt work you are only out a few dollars. The bead seats are also available onlne precut for motorcycles at around $25.
