Luggage Questions

I know this has been discussed a bit, but I can't find exactly what I'm looking for.

I'll be riding from Alaska to Argentina this summer on a '97 KLR 650 and I'm debating my luggage set up. Right now I'm leaning towards two hard panniers, two top duffles and a tank bag.

Question is: Do I really need motorcycle specific duffles or can I get away with MEC dry bags which are significantly cheaper.

Also, I've done some reading and the consensus seems that rotopax/extra fuel isn't really necessary.

Thanks for the input
Ben

I didn't know you could get "specific ones" ??

Have been using Ortlieb dry bags of various sizes for years, just tied on. Always stayed on, never got wet inside. With soft and hard panniers or without panniers. Not familiar with MEC but they look similar to me. Should do the job just fine.

Motorcycle specific is bit of a stretch. Ortlieb with Touraprat logos is just Ortlieb at five times the price. Chinese bin liners with Touraprat logos at silly money will ruin your day.

Climbers and sailors see to get ripped off less, but the water you are trying to keep out is pretty much universal.
