I have come across these Aluminium Cases for fitment to most models of motorcycles -

I suppose many of you will probably already know about this company?

I'm ordering a pair for my XT6. At only £150 they represent superb value for money compared to other similar cases.

Neil I saw a pair of these advertised recently, you will have to keep us updated at £150 it would save the bother of making youre own. They look pretty solid too.

A German guy was/is selling these on Ebay..... I bought a pair and to be honest I sold them on because they seemed a bit flimsy. I've never had a pair of Ally panniers (Touratech, Mules etc) so I don't have anything to compare them to, but the walls could be pushed in and even lightly dented by thumb pressure alone( Do other panniers do this?), and I felt that the back of the case where the fitting kits are drilled into would need more substantial bracing than the strips that were supplied. I fitted them and rode around a bit with minimal weight in them and I'm sure I could see them bouncing. I was worried that when fully loaded they would simply tear off! Like I said, I have no point of comparison and maybe I was worrying about nothing.......

I have Daerr panniers. They were old models and reduced. They're thinner than the new ones (.8mm I think) but they've survived off-road use and a couple of drops. The new ones are 1.2mm and cost 89 euros each:

The site is in German but they'll ship to the UK and with some guess work and babelfish it's easy enough to work out.

I don't remember how much shipping was (so it probably wasn't too bad).

I also have a set of Daerr boxes, I made a simple modification, I fitted a sheet of ali to the outside with a lip that fits under the bottom rim and a second piece in the inside. Ideal as its now treble skinned and ribbed… (sounds like a condom advert). I also use an automotive rubber grommet on each fixing bolt, prevents water and dust entering as well as minimal hole rounding. Down side is the box main join its on the front panel. In the event of a big off I recon this will be the first to go.. on a positive note, it will be easy to rebuild or have built whilst on the road.. better this than having the chassis welded. I use zip-able shopping bags as liners, works perfectly and at €1 each can’t really complain.

All for around €200

They’re a few years old now and survived a few low speed offs – still going strong…

Is the way to go. Ours survived Amsterdam to Cape Town and a lot of Turkey, including a lot of drops.
The main joint has not broken on ours, after serious drops we just hammered the boxes back in shape.
They hang on Hepco & Becker racks that also work great.
