Bike security

I am going to OZ from the UK via Europe, Iran, Pak, India, Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia.

Does anyone have any advice on bike security e.g. what to take (e.g.chain), alarm etc where to keep the bike on a night.

Also, can you get insurance that will cover you for theft in these countries.

Simon,

We rode overland from the UK to South-East Asia and didn't have any trouble with security except for a small incident in Turkey where some kids got into my (unlocked) tank bag. Otherwise, no one showed any interest in trying to get into our kit, in fact in most places they went out of their way to help us keep everything (including the bikes) secure. Once you're out of Europe, you'll find that many places will have their own security chappie stood outside who will take great pride in keeping your bike safe! In many places they invited us to park the bikes inside to keep them extra safe.

We took steel cable style locks (with their own integral padlock) as they're light weight and easy to stow away. When we stopped anywhere for a look around, we used to run the cable through the legs/sleeves of our biking clothes and lock them to the bikes. This worked a treat and no one ever touched them.

As for insurance - we had worldwide kit insurance to cover us, but can't remember who it was with. You will be able to get insurance, you just have to pay a high premium for it!
