A small fire extingusiher!?
 

After my very bad electricity reliability experiences with my previous jap bike that almost burnt down been giving a serious thought about carrying a small fire extinguisher on a bike.

Does anyone know if there are some very compact/lightweight ones available to fix it on a pannier?

Not sure if carrying a fire extinguisher is a useful idea. If the trouble is usually electrical it usually hits without flames. If fuel is a possible candidate to join the party then I suggest you to carry the extinguisher in your pockets somewhere.

Seriously though ,a small extinguisher would be a good idea .I had a tractor catch fire once and it was very handy to shove the extinguisher nozzle under the dashboard and put it out quickly .

I had a small fire on my bike because of the 12v adapter photos can be seen on my web site. It was really hard (and expensive) to put it out using my winter gloves (cost nearly £50). Carrying an fire extinguisher is not a must but probably the useful thing when needed.

a fire extinguisher is an excellent idea.you'll certainly wish you had one while you stand at the side of the road watching your bike go up in flames.
here's what I've fitted to my bike.small, lightweight and available from any car accs place.some even have mounting brackets included.

keep an eye on what you are buying most powder type have chemicals witch eat alu and paint away. and you can't drive with a hole in your motor

A question is rising after this post: What type of fire extinguisher do we have to carry?

I would recomend a type A,B,C. This is CO2, or carbon dioxide, made to extinguish all fires except metal, like magnesium. This leaves no residue, and will cool down your beer on a hot day in a pinch.


...BTW, have you ever seen a magnesium fire, like say the motor of a VW bug? The more water you pour on it, the faster it burns! Ouch!!

The extinguisher would need to be large to put out an entire bike fire.

You best bet with an electrical fire is a fuse! The rigfht size fues and wire will work to prevent a fire.


No I don't carry an extinguisher on the bike. It is heavy enough now! I'd use dirt/sand beside the road. Or shake up a can or three of soft drink or beer and spray that on.

Just a joke!!!!!!!
I used one once a little extinguisher to put presure on a flat tire.It lasted untill the next repair shop.
Also good for that.
