Satellite Phone
 

Those who know me will be surprised see me on this forum- seeing as how I don't even take a mobile phone when I travel

Well you are obviously not doing it properly! doh

What is the question?

I do take the cell phone with me.... most of the time it is turned ... off. I am on holidays.

A sat phone? No. I have used one, someone brought one along, once. Better off relying on local help. If it suits you .. take an EPIRB/PLB ... those have no ongoing fees .. just the purchase price, work on most the globe (missing the polar regions). Of course you still have to rely on the government rescue services wherever you happen to be. As you know - local help can be much better than gov help (faster.. and more friendly).

P.S. .. Even when the cell phone is 'on' .. it has a sleep mode .. automatically goes to 'sleep' 10pm to 6 am. I hope that is local time :)

As most people have mobiles these days you may be better served by having a InReach Delorme . You'll get the benefit of an SOS device and one which uses the Iridium network to send and receive text messages.

Second the InReach by Delorme. The Explorer is excellent and also functions as a good GPS. They have very good rates, and are good for off-grid comms as well as the tracking/GPS.

But we've given up on sat phones. Mostly if it is an emergency written comms are better anyway -- no need to keep repeating things with the generally poor connections you get with sat phones.

My apologies - that must have looked like a fairly random thread starter - I've just had a look and only half my original message is there - with the all important question being missing, unless I'm going mad and the actual question appears elsewhere.
It was my first, and possibly last, attempt at posting something using my phone (I'm home in the UK at the moment).
Anyway, the question goes something like this...
Friends of mine who are sea kayakers are looking at getting a satellite phone for use in emergencies on a kayaking trip in Mexico,

apparently it is fairly cheap compared to other ones and so my friends want to know if it is any good.


Any feedback from the HU bunch on it? I know it gets a mention above.

I also suggest an delorme inreach. Did use them while crossing africa or south america, to be able to stay in contact with friends & family in remote areas.


It is an emergency device, just optain them when you plan to leave the well 3G Covered touristic path`s ;-)

I am also for the Delorme Inreach. You can pair it with your smartphone and use the phone for typing messages. You can also get maps and stuff.

I know I can see packages here:

DeLorme inReach Subscription Plans

and I'm thinking of one to replace my Gen3 Spot and be able to use the sat phone if needed out of my home country. Any advice on what package might suit me best where the main use would be tracking, but having a few talk minutes per month would be helpful?

I see I can suspend the service and pay a nominal fee per month till I need it again which sounds sort of sensible

I have used the InReach Explorer for the last 12 months and can highly recommend it. Very easy to change plans.
Have used it on ships, yachts, tour coaches and motorcycles and even in a light plane over the Flinders Ranges in South Australia as well as Queenstown to Milford Sound in New Zealand.
