Ham radio on a Motorcycle experiance
 

I wonder if anyone has been using Ham radio equipment on a Motorcycle for any length of time? For about 3 years now I have had a Yeasu FTM-10 fitted to my bike, main body under seat and head on bars, audio feed to helmet via Starcom1 unit. All has worked well and continues to do so. It does how ever make me wonder just how robust the main unit is considering all the vibration it gets on rough tracks and roads.

Anyone else got a similar set-up, I know several people use handhelds mounted on the bars.

Howdy. KK4SFA here and while I don't actively ride with a radio right now it's a topic I've been following a long time, even before I got my license. There's a very active HAM community over at ADVrider and I'll drop some links below. The few riders I know personally that were active in motorbike mobile comms have all gotten out of it.

I really wish the 10R was still available. I think that was the best option for me if I wanted to run full time comms. I do a lot of bicycle race support and the local HAM clubs run radio support. I would love to be able to talk to them while out on the moto dealing with issues.

My dream setup is a FTM 10R or SR with a quick disconnect antenna tied to a Sena setup in the helmet. I will most likely end up just using my little Baofeng HT with a Sena SHM10 bluetoothed to a sena headset.

I carry the handheld most of the time I'm riding off road in the national forest here as the repeater network is amazing. A couple times I've been able to get emergency response for a vehicle accident in areas where there is no cell service. I like not having to leave people on the side of the rtoad to go off and get help.

As to the threads from ADVrider...there's a ton of them. Having read his posts for years now I tend to trust what I read from a guy called BlueLghtning (note the missing i). He's super smart and very methodical in his testing and builds.

The FTM-10 is a great radio I have the high power version as I felt the 10w version would be frustrating given the low antenna height and lack of ground plane. The only issue I have is that only the head unit is waterproof, unlike the 10 watt version which both are waterproof. If I drown the bike in a river crossing it could be a bad day for the radio!

Greetings from Clay, AA3JY as well my first post here..been running mostly low power HT's from the bike using mostly APRS mode. Does well in areas that are covered with lots of VHF digipeaters. Simple installation and not much draw on the bikes power.

Hi all,
WV1Q AL here and I was running a hard wired FT-2800m on my Harley but not I run the FTXD1 with APRS. I want to find the FTm-10 Yaesu for Motorcycle environments but a hard and pricey unit now. I will be building a ADV Two Radio on the next bike I purchase(KLR or Africa Twin). Haven't decided yet but want to use the Sena gear for a true wireless set up and remote controlled Ham Radio and CB. best Rides and QSO's,73 de WV1Q/ MM

Get a ham radio, or just morse code machine to send your emergency call, www.zachtek.com have some cheap device let you send your GPS location, so people on internet know where your are, this is cheapest solution.but first you need get a ham radio licence.
