Just came across this link and thought I'd post it here.
A phone that works virtually worldwide with affordable prices.

MAXroam - the sim that doesn't know that you're travelling

Chris of Japan 13 Nov 2007 12:49

Of course, it only works if there is GSM service.
Here in Japan we don't have GSM at all. Only CDMA and a Japan-only format...

GSM Japan

Cheers Chris.
Yep, Very tightly bundled in Japan these phone things!

Check out the Maxroam site.

Global SIM from go-sim

Global SIM from go-sim may also be of interest. They claim it works in 140 countries and call savings up to 85% compared to international roaming.

Way better value than Orange

So gets my vote:thumbup1: and you get to speak to nice Irish people too :D

Go Sim

Maxroam looks good, and there is this similar one too:

International SIM Cards from GOSIMâ„¢ - cheap mobile calls from abroad

It covers some countries that Maxroam doesn't and vice versa. It's also alot cheaper (free) for incomming in many countries.

I've ordered both because together they cover 99% of the countries on my trip.

Will post my findings on them here, eventually.

a better option

I checked the site you provided, but after doing some more research I decide to stay with CallinEurope. The rates they offer look more competitive compared to few sources I verified. And I won't have to pay any monthly fees and will be able to reroute my US number.

When my wife was abroad on business, we bought a SIM4travel card. Don't know how it compares but it's another option for those interested. It's all upfront with no contract or connection fees.

I'm on a ride from the UK back to Australia. When I booked my air ticket I was given a simcard from this mob:

ekit phonecard and mobile homepage

So far it's worked in every country I've been in. I'm now in Turkey after having travelled more than 20 000km. I don't know how it compares with the others mentioned here but as I only use it for a few text messages and the odd quick call back to Aussie, I'm happy with it.

The one thing that kind of bugs me is that they (GoSIM) claim 175 countries... which include (each counted separately): Balearic islands (Spain), Mallorca (Balearic islands, Spain), Menorca (again), Ibiza (and once more)... and the same for the Canary Islands... so that makes how many REAL countries I wonder? Definitely NOT 175, my guess is probably under 150 (if not considerably less) if they do that for every island group/chain, etc.

I almost feel like contacting them just so I can chant "Liar liar pants on fire" at them... I mean, if you're gonna make up stuff, at least don't be so bloody obvious about it. And if it's just ignorance... well... that's perhaps even MORE worrying. :dots:

And of course it's worth noting that ALL of those double (and triple) counted places are part of those "75" countries where you get free incomming calls...

PS: other "double"-counted areas I noticed: UK (England, Scotland, Wales & N. Ireland), Greek islands (Rhodes, etc.), Madeira (Portugal)...
