Cell phone plans for Europe/Asia?
 

Wondering if there any any plans I can look into or buy back here in Canada before I leave for 3 months on a trip through Europe and Asia.

Wondering what people have done in the past or if anyone has advice - thanks!

within the EU, generally with a SIM, you are charged your home eu country rates in other EU countries. Its called roaming.

I'd advise picking up a pay as you go (PAYG) sim card in the first EU country you get to, ask people in that country who offers the best prices and coverage. And make sure your phone is not locked to a carrier before you leave home.

Be careful if you are near non EU borders, if your phone connects to a non EU mast, you can be stung for higher rates.

As for outside of EU, I managed to buy sim cards at border towns in Turkey, Iran, Uzbekistan Tajikistan, Krygzstan, India, etc, you get the picture.

I tried one of these global sims in Iran before I activated my local sim, but it cost me a small fortune in data costs.

When i was traveling in Europe in 2015 the best deal was Lycotel. Put the sim chip in an unlocked phone and go.
It was 30 cents per connection plus 1 cent a minute to call basically anywhere. All in euro values so .60 euros to call family in Canada for a half hour. A deal at twice the price.

Just to update (no special news just in case anyone finds this old thread) I ended up simply buying sim cards along the way - googling where i can get the next card before leaving the current country's service area.

In Japan, out RTW Folks and just tourists get a Data SIM card for their phone and they are all set.

On the Asia side of it, In Thailand AIS or DTAC are the fine, there are others, you can get sims from the airport and 7-11 as well as other places. The data packages are not too bad. Some places will request to see your passport if you're getting a SIM card from them
I use AIS and pay 550 a month (about £12) for 6mb speed, unlimited usage, its used for downloading, streaming whilst my phone is connecting to my Mac and have never had a problem with it.
