 at the car diesease. i agree who wants comms etc on bikes? bikes are about purity of travelling & so forth to me.
|
Oh, I'd tend to agree with both of you, at the moment I stop and chat and have a fag, and if having comms means I smoke less, then that's good for my health, but bad for my morale.
I was thinking of this more as a "how to" than an "I want". I don't have a GPS at the moment, I don't have a video camera on my bike, I don't have coms, and I'm quite happy. But I know there are people who like all the gear, so I was pondering, the how could you do it all in one go thing. |
Maybe it's the geek in me but I like a bit of technology.
But I agree, it should be there if it is useful to the trip. |
panasonic toughbook cf 19 ... expensive but you can drive your bike over it and it would not even scratch it, it also have a 3g gsm reader so basically you pop your sim card in the slot and voila you have internet anyware in the world,

So long since anyone posted I'd forgotten about this thread. A question about the Panasonic. While you can ride your bike over it and not even scratch it how does it fair being turned on whilst strapped to your bike on corrugations? Does it have a hard-disc or solid state memory?
My idea was to think of how to reduce the number of different gadgets we might (but don't have to carry) so that we just end up with the one box which does everything (or as much as possible). |
about panasonic toughbook.. it is not as tough as it should be. my friend used to use one of the toughbook (not on a bike, just in home and office) after a year later he came up with black screen laptop and the service could not repeated it. i think asus eee or equavalent netbooks are perfect on the go with respect to price/efficiency.
i have an eee900a with 4gb solid drive and ubuntu 9.04 installed. have no single issues since now. |

only one flaw with that... all your eggs in one basket... John |
When you have all your eggs in one basket,... you tend to make sure you look after the basket. Not quite the same when you have half-a-dozen different electronic gizmos bashing into each other in your panniers. Also, gizmos aren't eggs(!) Lose one egg, so what, you've got 12 more. Lose one gizmo, and you've completely lost your ability to
recharge know where you are read a book send an email talk to your missus whatever, depending on which gizmo you lose. I think Alexlebrit has started a good thread here. I agree with most of his "must-haves". I particularly like the tablet idea - big map on your tank with plenty of screen size and resolution available for large-font directions etc. But I read on the Apple forums last week that Apple has been buying up stocks of (touch-sensitive?) 10" flat-screens. Anyone for a 10" souped up iPhone? |

Is that the same as a biker's dozen?
