Shipping bikes Panama to Colombia, March 2016

Hi all-

My wife and I shipping two bikes from Panama to Colombia. We are in Panama now, and are investigating with agents and forwarders for both container by sea, and also air freight. We have not decided which method we will use yet, but we need to be out of Panama by March 27 so are working hard on this.

We are interested if there are any others in the area also planning to do this, and would like to combine forces, please chime in and let's share knowledge.

Hi, we're currently in el Salvador, heading your way and looking to get further south. What have you discovered there?

We will be arriving Panama City Wednesday the 9th. Leaning toward air freight but final decision still not made. What is your phone and/or email (send PM) and we will contact you with the details of what we plan to do. We will probably ship out around the 15th-20th, depending on when mail and spares on order with BMW get here. Thanks for the response!

We have elected to ship airfreight, but not by Girag. We will likely ship out between he 15th and 20th. The company we've chosen is Servicarga, and the contact is Alfredo Amaya. Email him at amaya.alfredo at servicarga.com.pa. The cost comes down because we can split the "handling charge and dangerous goods charge and export declaration." Mention Jalene Case, and he should be able to pull up our info and include you. We'll look forward to seeing you!

New info-
We are shipping via airfreight. Using ServiCarga out of Panama City. We are booked for flying the bikes next week on March 16, 2016, so we have to turn them in to the shipper for crating up on the 15th. We pick them up in Bogota on the 16th. We are shipping as a group of 4, so the cost breaks down to about $820 each.

We visited the shipping office today and got everything pre-arranged. So far, great folks to deal with.

Bikes can have the boxes on. We will take the mirrors and windshields off, and strap everything plus helmets and gear down on the bikes. That way there is minimal crap to carry on the flight. We found tickets to Bogota for about $120 each on Viva Colombia. ServiCarga takes care of Aduana on the Panama side, not sure how it will work on the Colombia side.

Good luck,
Keith

If you're coming back to Panama at some point, be sure that the Panamanian aduana stuff really does get taken care of--and hang onto your paperwork. There's a distinct tendency to ignore the finer points at departure, since no one seems to really care.

This cost me the better part of a day kowtowing to petty bureaucrats 6 or 8 months after I left Panama for South America.

Hope that's helpful.

Thanks, Mark. We were diligent about Aduana leaving Panama. We have read that if not is all done properly, Colombia may refuse you, and that would be a terrific pain-de-ass.

We went inside the little building, as the idling trucks parked 10 feet away on both sides made hearing almost impossible. Then we asked lots of questions, and made sure the bikes got stamped out in our Passports. The guy was a bit new, and did not try to hide that, asking his supervisor for help. I appreciated that.
