Buyer beware. The ferry shake out voyage last year was shakey at best. Do your research and make an informed choice. I hope this captain gets his act together, but so far I am not impressed with the posts provided here and on Horizons Unlimited's Facebook group. I will go so far as to say the captain lacks marketing savvy, given his comments on Facebook.

met quite some people who got upset / let down by this ferry because the trip was canceled twice in a row. just FYI ...

i took another quite well known boat. was worth it, definitely more bang for the buck. if you got the time, take that one (operating for years, german too) anyways, good luck !

Update?

Has anyone here actually taken the San Blas ferry recently? Some current, first-hand feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks.

As far as I know he quit before he even started this year. You can buy the boat for 1350000US$ now...

Stahlratte,
I would much rather take the trusted Stahlratte and enjoy a good time, but I don't know if I can make it in time for the December 7 departure. I don't see a schedule for later Panama-to-Colombia trips. Do you have those dates yet? Many thanks, Vielen Dank.
Steve

Stahlratte 9 Sep 2015 00:26

Hi Steve,
the December 7th trip is the last one before the big caribbean tour to Jamaica, Cuba and Mexico. So after December there are no Panama/Colombia tours before June 2016, sorry.

June is probably a little late for me, anyone got any other suggestions for about March or April 2016?

hey guys!

Seems to be all ferries are closed? I am planing to cross from Colombia to Panama in the begining of febraury. So the only option what I have is 5 days San Blas cruise, right? it is a bit expensive 550$ for me + 550$ for the bike :(

Any suggestions?

Ivan

Airfreight the bike and fly yourself on the cheapest ticket you can find. That's your standard alternative--faster and only slightly more expensive.

Or: try the coastal route using various motorized dugouts, water taxis and roads via Turbo, Capurganá/Sapzurro, La Miel. Not the standard alternative, but people do it this way and they sometimes post descriptions.

Research: this site, ADVrider.com, Lonely Planet.

Note: the San Blas cruise is fun, scenic, and not a bad deal on a good boat.

Hope that's helpful.

Mark, thank you for the unswer!

How to look for the airfreight? Never did it:(

San Blas are really nice, I did it once without moto, but now they confirmed me that there are no oportunities to bring bikes :(

I don't want to sound grouchy, but as I said: do a search on the sites I listed. You could start with this one, since the HUBB has a shipping section which is easily searchable by origin, destination and method of shipping. First result up: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/shi...anama-may-2015. It's easy, and took me less than a minute.

best,

Mark

Options appear and fade. Airlift and sea container are always available. The Stalhratte rocks, when schedule matches yours and space is available. Smaller boats quietly transport a bike or two out of Panama. Backpacker hostels in Panama City sometimes have a lead on a captain that can help a rider. Colon is a rough town, so it takes an adventurous traveler to ask around the docks for an open cargo boat to Turbo or ports further east in Colombia.

Do some searching on ADVrider.com or several of the overland Facebook groups...
