Motorbike rental in Zacatecas - Mexico

Hi fellow travelers,

the past months I've been twice in Zacatecas in Mexico for work. In my free weekends I've been looking around to rent a motorbike but didn't manage to find anything (my limited Spanish doesn't help either).

I will be back in Zacatecas in August and would love to explore a bit by motorbike :mchappy:. Is there anybody who knows a company or individual that would rent out a motorbike in the Zacatecas area? Any info would be greatly welcome.

Thanks a lot and travel safely.

That's going to be difficult. It's not easy to find motorcycle rentals anywhere in Mexico. You might occasionally find a place in a touristy city like Cancun that rents out overpriced Harleys or 50cc scooters, but not too much in between.
I thought there might be something based in Mazatlan, but a quick Googling finds only this little scooter shop: Rent Scooters in Mazatlan, & Driver Guides of Mazatlan
No idea if they are any good - or even still open for business.

Perhaps the best thing might be to make good friends with the local folks you work with, and ask if anyone has a small motorbike they'd be willing to 'lend' you for a few bucks. 125s are all over the place in Mexico, so it wouldn't be surprising to find someone willing to let you borrow one if you give them some money in exchange for the privilege.

Are you staying in a hotel for your work, or with a family? Do you think you'll make a lot of future visits? If you're going to be spending a lot of time there over the next several months, it might be worth buying a little Honda CGL125 for $1300 US and storing it somewhere safe between visits...?

I've rented bikes doing exactly what brclarke suggests: ask whatever local people you run into, including hotel clerks, moto mechanics, or people who just happen to be riding around on their own bikes. As in all business relationships, don't just launch into that conversation without preamble; establish a relationship or some shared ground first.

Someone will pop up and rent you their bike. Think carefully about insurance issues, safety concerns, and maintenance standards--I once ended up riding at night on an African motorway with a bike which had only intermittent lighting. Not a happy time.

There are definitely motos for rent in Mexico--at least, I hung for a while with one of the several companies renting enduro bikes in San Miguel de Allende. I'd suggest sending an inquiry to whatever local communities you can find on this site or ADVrider. Note that listings are not necessarily current, but also remember that not everyone pays close attention to email or internet. http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/connect/contact

Hope that's helpful.
