It would be great to join up with anyone riding along the same trail as I am. Always makes it fun. Looking forward to getting down there and meeting up. What is the best way to stay in contact with you as I get down in that area? my direct email is garystreff@earthlink.net

Tires and Spanish

Hello Chefonbike68,

Yes you can get the tires in Guatemala, Bavaria Motors and a small outfit have them, but you might have better luck finding sizes in San Salvador. Look up Motoaction Salvador in FB https://www.facebook.com/motoactionsv/info, I don't know if they have a website. If you go to the thread Advriders in Guatemala you can get more info from active local riders. The owner of motoaction Salvador is Mario97 in Advrider. Contact him.

Regarding Spanish lessons, San Pedro La Laguna is where a lot of riders have been choosing to learn. I believe people are paying about $85 a week for school and $70 for room and board at local family home set ups.

There is 95% tarmac, and nice towns to go through. I recommend to everyone to avoid the CA-9 as the traffic consist mainly of semitrucks traveling at 120-140 kms/h. There are several other options of roads less traveled in Between San Cristobal Verapaz and Chichi, but I don't know your taste in roads, nor do I know your interest. The portion from Cubulco to San Andres Sajcabajá is a wide dirt road with mountain climbs, but the views are so good, I did not mind it, no river crossing on this one, and my wife did it on a Yamaha Fazer 250, so again I know your set up can handle it. This is a not so common road and very few local biker even know it...

Let me know if you want more suggestions about the area and how long you are planning on staying in Guatemala, I can help. I am a local rider that stays of the beaten path. If you want more dirt, more landscape, more river crossings, cold, hot....just ask I can point you in the right direction.

Isla de Flores to Panajachel, Guatemala - Google Maps

Hi Richsuz,

I am in the early stages of planning my CA leg of rtw beginning 2014 and the route you described is exactly the route I had mapped out, so thanks for the confirmation!
I'm keen to meet other riders, especially with local knowledge and I also like the idea of family stays to learn Spanish for a few weeks in Guatemala. I'll PM you closer to the time.

Regards,
PN
