Driving with a temporary license in Tijuana

My Michigan drivers license expired and while I wait for the new one to arrive in the mail I was given a temporary license. The temporary license is composed of my voided, expired license stapled to a piece of paper that declares itself as my temporary license, expiring sometime in February.

I have a place booked in Tijuana and was planning on waiting there for the license to arrive.

I‘ll need to get a TVIP and FMM at the border crossing for further travel. I doubt my temporary will work for the TVIP, so I’ll have to go back.

1) Do I have to exit and return to get the TVIP if I don’t get it on my first entry?

2) Am I risking prison/impoundment of my bike by running around Tijuana with my temporary license?

I could simply bring my bike down and then take ride-sharing cars around in the interim. But I’ve spent a long time preparing the bike and really don’t want to risk things.

Any advice on this rather particular matter would be greatly appreciated.

I don't see any replies so here is my experience from last year. I assume you mean Tijuana Mexico if so you need to repost in the correct section Central America and Mexico. Anyway I got my TVIP when I boarded the ferry for Mazatlan at La Paz. As for licence never been looked at in Mexico or any part or South America. For the TVIP I needed passport rego papers for the bike and my credit card. Stay safe

You say you have a place booked in Tijuana , does that mean a condo or hotel where you are going to stay for the full period of your visit to Baja ?
Be absolutely clear in your explanations of what your intentions are ,please .

If that is the case , that you are only going to visit Tijuana and surrounding areas of Baja , and perhaps even BCS down to Cabo San Lucas then you DO NOT NEED the TVIP and so your worries about the temp license are groundless.
Your Temp License is the real and official license and will be understood as valid up to its Feb. expiry date . It is not a Crackerjack toy ,right .?

You will need to get the FMM (tourist card ) but for that no need for showing the DL , you need a PASSPORT.
You will need to buy Mexico Liability insurance but again your license is legal and valid in its ammended state .
You can easily get the FMM and the insurance .

You will be perfectly okay and legal to drive there with your temp license .

If you intend to take the Ferry from Pichilingue to the mainland you can postpone getting the TVIP until at the actual ferry terminal after you get your new permanent license , if that will ease your concerns .
Do make it a point to show up at the Ferry terminal BANJERCITO window early in the day because they have variable closing hours ,in a regular pattern through the week , but they are open each day . . Be there before 3 pm.

If the ferry is in your plans you could give it a try to get the TVIP at the border .
A sure fire place to get the TVIP in Tijuana is at the OTAY MESA crossing where the Banjercito is located on Sebastian Viscaino street hugging the west side of the actual terminal fence . Go to Google maps and ZOOM in on the satellite view and the labels for it will pop up .
